Will Extracurricular Activities Affect Job Opportunities During And After College

How important is having extracurricular activities in college, and what is its impact on employability?

I'd like to approach this question from a slightly different angle:The term extracurricular – meaning “outside the curriculum” – is very limiting. The word implies that the formal curriculum should be the center of your college life – or more dangerous still, that the curriculum, if dutifully followed, will put you on the path to professional success. Look at some of the world’s most successful innovators and business people and ask yourself if they’d attribute their success to the college curriculum. Take a few obvious examples like Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, none of whom completed college. Their experiences instantly mock the notion that worthwhile activities that don't produce a letter grade should be seen as extra-. It was what Branson, Zuckerberg and Gates were doing outside of class that created the foundation for their extraordinary success. We need to find a new word for extracurricular. The things you do outside of class can be among the most important determinants of your post-college life. They’re not extra – they’re integral. I made the mistake of dabbling in extracurricular activities in college because I was constantly afraid of committing to one thing, for fear I’d miss out on something better. The irony was that I ended up missing out on more this way. There were kids who, unlike me, approached their extracurricular activities as a job – like the editors of the college paper, or the literary magazine. They still had time for fun, friends and academic success. In fact, their extracurricular lives imposed a framework upon their days, letting study and social time fall naturally into place. Their extracurricular “jobs” also made them attractive job candidates. Think about the kid who writes regularly for the college paper: He graduates with proven skills that professional publications are looking for: grit, writing ability, comfort with deadlines, and passion for the work. Indeed, if you want to add real skills to your resume while you're looking for your first job out of college, then committing to an extracurricular activity that has relevance in the real world is a better means of doing that than almost any college class.

How important are extracurricular activities when transfer to UCLA?

I am a community college student in southern california. I am almost done with all my major pre-reqs. Done with igetc. I have done some volunteer work. I have had a couple of jobs within the last years (college years). Have a high gpa. All I do not have are extracurricular activities. Will that affect my chances of acceptance? And if I were to join an ec activity this fall semester of 07, when I am planning to transfer fall 08, will that even help???

Does volunteer experience count towards extracurricular activities?

Like if i was writing up my college resume and had to put extracurricular activities, could I put some of my volunteer experience?
I'm part of clubs at my school, but I'm really just a member who comes to meetings and doesn't hold any special position/job in it. And I don't do any sports.

Do extracurricular activities affect placement?

Thanks for the A2A.IMO, extracurricular activities are vitally important for the following reasons: -1) Versatility : Apart from the usual grind of academics, you have managed to do something else shows that you are someone who is diverse and capable of managing multiple things. The experiences of those activities do come in handy through out life and Interviewers know that. 2) Team Work n Character Building : - Working under a society, organizing events, planning fests etc teach one how to work in a team. Trying to get sponsors for extracurricular events is an Interview in itself. Also, when you participate and lose, you learn handling failures and taking positives out of them. They help you in pressure situations. 3) Communication  :- Not just Spoken English, your extracurricular activities give you pointers for questions like "Tell Me something about yourself" and "Apart from studies, What did you do in your graduation years". Also, if you have one bad grade or a bad semester, "I was over involved in XYZ society" is a better excuse than "I was ill that sem". Also, if you plan to do an MBA or want to opt for non core companies (Consultancies etc), these factors become even more vital.

Will being a stripper during college affect me being a teacher in the future?

That's a tough question. Honestly, the answer is no, especially if you do not place it on your resume. The hiring school/district will have no clue. The tough part is trying to keep that part of your life a secret. So long as you do not look for a job, complete your practicum, or do you student teaching in the town that you are stripping in you should be fine. The world is not big, and the last thing you want as a student teacher is for a student to spot you at the strip club. It'll ruin your relationship with the district but more specifically, students will lose respect of you. So again, you can be a stripper and find a job, but it is risky. Also, be extra cautious about your Facebook, Twitter, and Instragram. You don't want "friends" revealing your secrets. Even if you site is private, some districts will as you to log onto you social media during the interview.

Does extracurricular activities help in placements?

ok.. Let me be very clear and direct to you. You are in Engg. college so no matter what, your CGPA should be high else you will surely face trouble in future. Putting some example to support myself. 1. If u want to go to DEFENCE( techincal branch), then they look for student secured above 70%.2. suppose you dont want to join army and your interest in in private co. then also they will surely look your CGPA and your reason for low marks (that you are participating in extra CCA will not be enough to convince them. If that was the base of selection, they would have hired all sports team. THIS IS BITTER but true. 3. For any other govt. job like SSC, bank po, DRDO and other PSU you need to clear their writtern exam and other procedure. They dont give shit that you are meritorious or not, However their exam need a hard work and consistency in study. After graduation u may find difficult to devote more time to study as you had already lost interest. And for that it is very important to study so that you remain interested in it. 4.Any person giving you good salary will look your every quality. Its good to participate in Extra CCA but you can’t compromise it with your studies. if you are doing then it shows you can’t handle multiple work at a time.5. I am myself a sports player . Played at university level (Basket ball, 1600 m race and got both certificate and medal) Judo (state level, silver medal). English debate (Intra college, consolation price) Dance (Intra college, came 2nd) but country like INDIA these achievement wont help you at high level in careerTIPS: I dont suggest you to totally stop participating in extra CCA. You must participate in it. These things have many advantages too1) It will surely boost your confidence level. 2) You will never get bored or will never feel burden in your life. 3) opportunity to make a lot of new friends. you will become popular too. But analyse yourself that when you have to focus more on studies. If your exam are near, start participating less and devote more time on studies. NOTE: You may get benefit for your extra CCA only if you are WINNING in it at University level, state level, national level, International level.
