Will I Ever Get Used To My Horse

How can I get used to the idea of riding another horse?

You’ve progressed in your riding education to the point where you need another equine instructor. Think of it as going to a different classroom and different teacher for a given course. Would you want to stay in Algebra I just because you love the teacher instead of moving on to the new challenges of Algebra II and a new teacher?Your original horse is meant for teaching beginners. It takes a special horse to fill this role. It’s what she does best. Your instructor is moving you on so that you can learn new things and other beginners can benefit from what your first horse can teach them. You can still visit her, feed her carrots or apples if allowed, brush her, do whatever you like. You’re just advanced enough that you need a new horse to teach you new things.I guarantee, you’ll be perfectly happy with the challenges your new horse will present you, and in a month you won’t miss your first friend.

Will my horses ever graze again in the area they have "pooped"?

they will but you have to keep it mown and spread the manure. horses have a very interesting way of avoiding parasite naturally, they do develop potty areas, but are not so strict about adhering to them. those potty areas they avoid. funny enough the better parasites are controlled the closer they will graze to manure, the worse the control the wider a berth they give manure.

there was a really good artical about this in a back issue of equus but for the life of me i cannot recall what its name was. i also saw this information in my ohio state university agricultural extension workshop. part of the problem may be a palatibily issue, from lack of grazing weeds or other less desirable forage may be heavy in those roughs adding to the horses lack if interest in graxing there. you may need to overseed the area with a more popular grass.

How can I get used to riding a tall horse?

I had the EXACT same problem. I outgrew my 12.1hh pony, and had to go straight from 12 hands to at least 16 hands to take up my suddenly long legs! It's so hard for people to understand the difference in gait, and why it's so hard for someone who has mainly ridden ponies. It's scary, and I was afraid to ride my new Thoroughbred (who was still quite green to top it all off)! What I had to do to get used to it, was just keep riding tall horses a ton. Ride your mom's horse a lot until you're somewhat used to him, then try riding a horse who is a little more difficult (not so much that you'll fall off, just a bit of a challenge for you). I feel like I'm giving backwards advice, but getting used to a tall horse on my green OTTB, while scary, was exactly what I needed. I was nervous on her for a long time, but now I can ride any tall horse and not feel one bit uncomfortable. It will force you to get used to the gait, and make other big horses feel easy. But for now, I would ride your mom's horse a lot until you feel more comfortable on him. Trust me, if you keep working at it, you'll get it! I thought I'd never EVER feel just as comfortable on a horse as I do on a pony, but now I do and I'm happy I pushed myself though it. Lots of luck! <3

How do you get a horse used to packing dead animals?

Next time you get anything, rub blood on the horse's nose. It sounds weird, but it is the smell that is getting to him. So rub some blood on his nose, even in his nostrils a little. He won't be able to get rid of the smell and will calm down quicker. You may find that you need to blind fold him when you actually go to load him up. And just make sure you tie it down good so that, in case he does spook, your meat won't get to damaged.

Good luck hunting!

I am moving to Alaska from Oklahoma Will my horses aclamate to the new climate or will it be too hard on them?

I live in Southern Oklahoma and I have had a job offer in ALASKA - It is for me and ALL of my horses.

I was just told this morning by my farrier that moving horses from this climate to that kind of climate would not be good for them - that horses do not aclumate very well to such drastic change and it would be better for me to sell my horses here and buy a new herd there .

Now I have 12 Horses/Equines and all but 5 of these have been raised by me since they were born or at the very oldest since they were 6 months old - they are very special to me and I have bonded very closely to these animals. (And 2 of the 5 aquired at older ages are very special animals to my children.)

Also with the aspect of there being very large game my horses are not accustomed to - Bear - moose etc... which I realize they can with training get use to this ---

What is your knowledge on this - taking horses from one type of climate to another and how do they fare with this??
