Will My Manual Transmission Car Stall If I Am In 3rd Or 4th Gear Then I Suddenly Stopped Even I Am

Manual Transmission Questions?

I'm doing some research on learning to drive a stick shift, watching YouTube videos, reading, and I obviously don't know much which is why I have questions and will probably have more in the future as I'm nervous about it (but won't be getting a new car for a while).

1) If you stall out uphill, and the car starts to roll back, will pressing the brake be enough to stop, or should you engage the Emergency brake.

2) Can you downshift straight from 4th gear to 1st gear, or 4th to neutral lets say if you have to make an abrupt stop, or do you have to go through all the gears: 4th to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd, etc?

3) I read somewhere that downshifting isn't even necessary, but doesn't it hurt the engine to brake from 3rd gear to a complete stop?

Thanks for any and all help, and if you know a great informative site, feel free to post the link. :)

What is the correct method to apply brakes in a manual transmission car, first clutch, then brakes, or directly brakes?

If you are learning to drive you will get lots of false advice on this subject. Almost everyone will say brake first. In fact it depends on your speed, what gear you are in and whether you are going uphill, downhill or are on the flat. It can also depend on how your engine management system is programmed. If you want to slow smoothly you should consider how much engine braking you will get by coming off the gas. At high engine revs in low gears engine braking is considerable. At low engine speeds in high gears it is negligible. If you brake when going very slowly in some cars they will speed up as the engine management increases the revs as it suspects the car may be on the way to stalling. If coming off the gas will cause the car to slow down more than is comfortable or necessary put the clutch down first. Then release the gas as the clutch goes through the biting point. Your gas foot can now move to the brake. This tactic is generally used at speeds of below 20mph.At higher speeds in higher gears engine braking will not slow you down as sharply and so you can comfortably benefit from it. It can also save fuel to use engine braking, as the fuel supply is shut off on the over-run on many modern cars. Then once you get down to about 20mph you can depress the clutch.Over-run is where the engine is being turned by the kinetic energy of the car rather than the chemical energy of the fuel.

How do u make a sudden stop in a manual car?

You jam on the brake, of course. 8^) You should also press the clutch so the engine doesn't die, but in a panic stop, where you just want to STOP, that's not necessary. If you forget to push the clutch, the engine will die, but the car will still stop.

Driving manual transmission on highway tips?

ok so my question is that lets say you on just got on the highway and are at 40 mph in 4th gear and you need to slow down to merge, do you need to press the clutch so the car wont stall? or can you just shift into lower gear and use brakes? when is there a situation when you need to press the clutch for the car from not stalling? and and how to make it easier to shift from stand still 1st to 2nd gears?

Automatic transmission, Whats faster [D, 1, 2 or 3]?

your pontiac is equipped with a Hydra-Matic 4T65-E 4-speed electronic automatic FWD transverse gear box. each gear has a term called gear ratio. The gear ratio is the relationship between the number of teeth on two gears that are meshed or two sprockets connected with a common roller chain, or the circumferences of two pulleys connected with a drive belt.

Basically when your engage it in 'D', the car computer will automatically engage a gear according to the speed of the car and how heavy your foot is on the acceleration pedal. Once engaged, it will then again automatically switch to the next appropriate gear base the 2 things ive mentioned before (speed and acceleration).

Lets say you are in a stand still position and you intend to accelerate the fastest way possible. You should engage 1st gear and floor the accelerator. The revs we built up and off you go. With the shifter now placed in '1', the car computer will rev the engine(car is now accelerating) until you have reached the redline(maximum engine revolution) of your pontiac before you manually shift to 2nd. And this continues until the 4th gear and at one point you will reach the top speed of your car.

Now, with the above scenario but the shifter is placed at D from stand still. The car will accelerate but automatically changes to 2nd, 3rd and 4th without pushing the engine to its very limit. Thus your acceleration time to a certain speed compared with the scenario above increases.

So, technically speaking while you are cruising and you intend to overtake a car, you can select 2nd or 3rd on the shifter to increase your rate of acceleration of the car. Leaving it in D will also increase your acceleration but the car computer determines which gear is suitable for the acceleration and at what speed you currently are.

To conclude, in order to accelerate the fastest, you must select either 1, 2 or 3 depending on the current speed of your car.Ofcourse 1st is selected in standstill.

Hope this helps.

Can you set a manual car into neutral if its on 2nd,3rd,4th,5th gear? or do you have to downshift?

Yes, it is possible to do so, as long as you're efficient in your braking. If you're going at high speed however, best you change a lower gear to help your vehicle slow down. Even at 80km/h (or 50mph), I tend to change to a lower gear to help my car slow down (as my brakes are not so efficient, being an old car) for braking when coming to junctions, corners and down slopes.

How to stop manual car quickly?

Yes, you maintain control of the car by keeping your foot on the brake until you are ready for the car to move again. Whenever the car is stopped, and you mean for it to stay stopped, your foot is on the brake. You are either driving it or holding it.

So yes, in an emergency stop you'd use both brake and clutch. Then when the car was stopped, you'd keep brake and clutch down while you shifted back to first gear. Then release the brake and let out the clutch to drive away,.

How do you know when to shift gears in a manual car?

Normally, when accelerating you go up through the gears sequentially; when decelerating, down through the gears sequentially, though you might well stop in second, rather than first. When to change is more of a question, and depends on the car, the conditions, and how you want to drive. In normal poodling around, the engine is happy between about 1500 and 3000 rpm, which is easy to check if you’ve got a tachometer/rev counter. If not, you have to go by the sound of it. It’s easy to tell when the revs are too low, because the car will start to feel lumpy, juddering in its motion. If you’ve got there, you need to have changed down a gear a while ago. You’ll particularly feel this going up a hill, which is another occasion when you need to change down, even when you’re keeping to the same speed. As for the upper limit, it depends on the engine, and how you’re driving. If you really want to accelerate hard, then you change up later. Typically a modern engine is good to about 5,500 to 6,500 rpm. You really want to change up before that a bit, if you want the engine to last. There are also things like speed limits to attend to.Typically, you will start in first, and as soon as you’re rolling go into second. Third is good from about 20 mph to 30 mph (30 to 50 kph). Beyond that, fourth is normally good up to 55–60 mph (90–100 kph), and beyond that fifth, though you could be into fifth earlier if you’re rolling along on a good flat road. Change down at about the same speeds, but a bit earlier if you’re either using engine braking, or slowing down, but wanting to accelerate quickly afterwards. Often a good idea to change down before overtaking, so you spend as little time as possible on the wrong side of the road.My funnest car ever was a Honda S600. Tiny motor: up to 6000 rpm it roared: beyond that it screamed (the redline was about 10,500 rpm, IIRC). I spent a lot of time in very low gears, not exceeding the speed limit.
