Will My Teeth Shift If I Get My Second Molar Extracted

Tooth extraction - worried about teeth shifting?

Hello,
I've just had my 2nd premolar extracted on the top left side of my mouth. I'm going to have to wait between 3 to 5 weeks before a bridge can be fitted. For cosmetic reasons, I am worried about my teeth shifting - will they start to move within this small amount of time? And if so, by how much? Will the straightness of my front incisors be affected, or only those close to the extraction site? I am 22 year old male. Thank you

Teeth Shifting After Molar Extraction?

The tendancy is for teeth to shift towards the front of your mouth, but it is indeed possible to see a molar move a bit to the rear once the "bookend" is removed. I'd say that I see this more with an upper tooth than a lower.

Can a wisdom tooth shift a month after my second molar extraction or is it too early?

Wisdom tooth would shift into the space left by second molar and that too if the extracted molar isn’t replaced. It’s a slow migration, the wisdom tooth would not be in ideal anatomical, functional upright position.Yes, you are right in saying that it’s too early to see the migration. It takes years for wisdom tooth or any other tooth to become visible in the empty place of neighboring tooth.

What happens if a second molar is extracted?

The tooth that occludes with the one removed will eventually super erupt causing discomfort and hyper sensitivity.

Additional information: As for shifting, you don't have anything to worry about since you are missing the 3rds and the tooth in discussion for removal, is a second. Posterior shifting does occur but much later in life and generally affects all of the teeth.

An implant is always considered the best option, but only if there is sufficient bone structure to offer the required support for many years to come.

Another option is a cantilever bridge. The cantilever bridge is usually favorable due to it's affordability vs. an implant. Deciding on the cantilever would require using your first molar and most likely the next bicuspid as the abutment teeth. These two teeth would be prepped for crowns, with the pontic or fake tooth (that replaces the missing tooth) in its position or off the back with all three fused together and cemented into place making this a non-removable or fixed appliance.

Discuss all of your options with your dentist; he can be an invaluable asset when helping you make any restorative dental decisions since he knows your back ground with oral health, current dental condition and over all medical health. I hope that I've given you a better idea of what is available so you can discuss both of these options with your dentist at your next appointment. Good luck with your pending procedures.

2nd mollar extraxtion?

I have a severely cracked 2nd mollar on the bottom and its extremely painful, bleeds and is decaying. I can t afford to get a replacement for it and I am having trouble getting approved for care credit. So my question is what issues will come with extracting it? Will it mess up my whole mouth or will it be noticoble when I smile or will it mess up how my jaw/ face looks on the outside? I have pretty crowded bottom teeth, will it end up helping with spacing or cause gaps? I m getting a bit desperate from the pain and don t really feel like waiting much longer to see if I can get approved.

Will my teeth shift back normally after i extract my wisdom tooth?

I am planning to get my wisdom teeth pulled out because i think my bottom right wisdom tooth is starting push hard on the teeth. The pain is excruciating and it's spread throughout my lower jaw, not to mention the headaches! I can actually feel one my front teeth being pushed back and the pain is so intense that I've switched painkillers from Paracetamol to Ponstan (Mefenamic acid 500 mg) and it's doing a much better job.

But after consulting with my dentist, he said there's a long waiting list and my appointment for the operation is still mid January and that's a long time considering the pain and damage that the tooth is inflicting. I'm worried that by the time I will be operated some of my teeth will have already been shifted badly. This comes to my question, that after the extraction, will my teeth naturally shift into their normal positions, or does my dentist have to straighten them out?

What will happen if I don't replace an extracted molar in the lower jaw?

Nothing will happen right away, but with time, the bone in that region will resorb. Then the tooth in the upper jaw will start supra erupting in come down. This can cause problems with closing your mouth and biting. Then the teeth on the right and the left will start tilting towards the empty space again causing malocculusion. So it is preferable that you get a bridge or maybe an implant. Implant is a better option because it doesnt need any cutting of your other teeth. If you want to get a bridge you need to cut some portion of the teeth on the right and the left and in the long run, even with the prosthesis or a cap you will have dental caries and so the dentists usually do a root canal treatment before placing bridge. It will cost you almost equal to that of an implant.

Can you remove second molars to make a room for wisdom teeth?

It’s done but only when the second molar is not salvageable owing to gross caries causing loss of major part of tooth structure. In such a situation the second molar is extracted and third molar is transplanted in the place of 2nd molar.I am not an orthodontist, therefore the rationale & theory behind removing a healthy second molar to correct teeth crowding, I am unaware of it.The consensus based upon several studies is that third molars commonly known as “Wisdom Teeth” are vestiges, have far less important role in function and esthetics than 2nd molars. A dentist usually makes all efforts to save second molars.

Will my other molars separate a little now that my wisdom teeth have been removed?

Possibly.I have a very, very tiny jaw. Flossing used to be nearly impossible; everything was just packed in too close!I had braces years before my wisdom teeth were removed. The braces helped my teeth arrive at a normal, even spacing; they’ve stayed that way ever since. All four wisdom teeth were removed when I was in my early twenties. I can run dental floss between most of my back molars more easily now, but I honestly chalk that up to shifting after braces but before wisdom tooth removal. My orthodontist doesn’t use a full retainer for the lower jaw, and I’ve noticed some shifting since getting my braces off years ago.In the end, as others have said, it depends on many factors. My wisdom teeth had never really shifted my molars; everything was far too tight and impacted and I got them out before those pesky wisdom teeth were really on the move. Therefore, perhaps my molars didn’t need to take advantage of an opportunity to space out, because they hadn’t been disturbed in the first place.Or, maybe my tiny jaw just resists shifting.

If I get my wisdom tooth extracted, will there be an ugly hole at the place where it was? Will my second molar start moving backwards?

When any tooth is removed, the hole in the gum and bone will heal. It starts as a clot, that becomes connective tissue, which is infiltrated by bone. The whole process takes 8 weeks or so.When a wisdom tooth is removed, the exact same process happens. The hole gradually closes and it heals. Since the wisdom tooth is the back tooth in the mouth, there is little danger of a second molar drifting significantly backward. I suppose it could happen in the upper arch, but this is very rare.
