Will They Remove The Vikings Name

Why are the Minnesota Vikings named with the state of Minnesota? Not a city?

What about the New England Patriots? They're not named for a city or state but a region. You also have the Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, and Arizona Cardinals. It's a matter of naming the team when they come into the league, or changing in some cases (Boston to NE, Phoenix to AZ). Hope this helps.

What sound do vikings make?

You'll get an echo of that, in English, if you go to Yorkshire and listen to the way English is spoken there. It's an extensive part of the North of England which was settled by Scandiwegians before 1066 and where white English people remain predominantly of Viking descent.

Yorkies have a reputation with the rest of us for being blunt, taciturn, uncompromising, "careful" with money (in the way the rest of Scotland thinks people from Aberdeen are "careful" with money), and have provided some of the toughest soldiers in the British Army.

Yorkshire speech is peppered with Scandinavian loan-words a Swede or Norwegian would instantly recognise - "mither", "skryke", "thrawne", et c - and still makes the old distinction, archaic in other forms of english, between "thee/thou" and "you".

Of course, Icelandic is virtually unchanged from what it was when the Vikings arrived a thousand years ago, so gang thee hither, carl, an hearken thee to the stromkaerl and the saga!

What are Viking runes?

Their written language, most commonly the Eldar Futhark, and believed to have magical uses too. It will be easier to just print basics from other sources:

The three best-known runic alphabets are the Elder or Eldar Futhark (around 150–800), the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (400–1100), and the Younger Futhark (800–1100). The Younger Futhark is divided further into the long-branch runes (also called Danish, although they also were used in Norway and Sweden), short-branch or Rök runes (also called Swedish-Norwegian, although they also were used in Denmark), and the stavesyle or Hälsinge runes (staveless runes). The Younger Futhark developed further into the Marcomannic runes, the Medieval runes (1100–1500), and the Dalecarlian runes (around 1500–1800).
The earliest runic inscriptions found on artifacts give the name of either the craftsman or the proprietor, or sometimes, remain a linguistic mystery. Due to this, it is possible that the early runes were not used so much as a simple writing system, but rather as magical signs to be used for charms. Although some say the runes were used for divination, there is no direct evidence to suggest they were ever used in this way. The name rune itself, taken to mean "secret, something hidden".

Each rune has a name and value http://www.sunnyway.com/runes/

My hubby wants to name our puppy Loki, which means "The Viking God of Mischief and Evil"....Opinions please???

Not necessarily Viking, but Norse, yes. Loki is a member of the Aesir.

Not necessarily "evil" -- he has his redeeming qualities. But he is a trickster, the God of mischief, deceit -- one of the archetypal storm chasers. Be aware that -- although Loki is a male -- the God did, in fact, give birth to a daughter (a 9-legged horse). So it could go either way.

For the record, I was Loki before Loki was cool. ;)

What was the farthest land vikings raided?

Well … there’s Vikings and there’s Vikings at one remove. We’ll come back to that.Short story is that Viking raided anyplace that (a) they could reach, and (b) the locals “looked like wimps”. Which was pretty much everywhere:Where it gets interesting is that sometimes they raided, loaded up loot, women, and the bitter tears of the few survivors, and went home. But sometimes they … stuck around. Two of their greatest achievements were Russia and Normandy. The deal with Normandy was that the King of France got tired of Vikings sailing up the Seine and knocking things over. So he made a deal with one of them, a fellow hight Rollo (Rollo the Walker). Rollo and his people would be given some land around where the Seine opens out, in exchange for preventing other Vikings from sailing up the rivers. This area is now called Normandy. So the Vikings turned French, but a revitalized, energetic type of French. The adventures of the Normans were far-ranging as well, and worthy of its own discussion (Normans - Wikipedia).Their influence on Russia was equally intense — turns out they gave Russia its name! (VIKINGS IN RUSSIA) As in France, they eventually melded in with the locals, but brought their own brand of energy to the mix, founded Novgorod and kickstarted Russian history.
