Will learning a Martial Art help me get into college?

I really want to learn brazilian jiu-jitsu and right now I'm having a little trouble asking my parents. I'm a sophomore in high school and I juggle other sports such as golf. I want to learn brazilian jiu-jitsu as a hobby but do you think it would help me get into college such as something I could list or maybe somewhere I could get a letter of reccomendation from? I really want to take bjj but I think I would make a more convincing arguement it helped me get into a better college. Also later on if My bjj is very strong I want to become involved in Mixed Martial Arts is that a help too?

Will being a published author help me get into a good college?

It's great that you're starting young - my Creative Writing professors say that's one of the best things you can do if you want to be a writer. However, I wouldn't get your hopes up if I were you, and that's because I used to be in the same boat. I used to think I would be a failure if I didn't have a book published by the time I was 18. Now I'm 19. I've had a play produced, but no books as yet - and that's because I've spent the past five years working on a book, refining and revising. I'm not expecting to see my name on a cover for about ten years. Teenagers very rarely get books published, and that's because the work of beginners is, more often than not, in any field, crap. Yes, I know Eragon was written by a teenager - Eragon is derivative rubbish that should never have seen the light of day.
For now, start small. Write for your friends, and your school, and story competitions, and yourself. Practice is the best thing you can get.

Would the 504 plan help me get into college?

Personally, I have a 504 plan due to anxiety issues. It is very unlikely that it will help you get into college- it's merely a way of dealing with specific persons needs while in school. If you're having difficulty in school due to your disorder, then a 504 plan is great. If you just want to use to 504 plan as an excuse, it won't work. 504 plans usually result in improvement in school, not just an excuse.

Will staying in marching band help me get into college?

WOW!!! I was in the same exact place seven years ago—my school’s band got cut from a 7 period to 6 period day. 90% of my friends quit.I was one of two seniors left in band. I switched from trumpet (my main instrument) to tuba, and took lessons, because our band didn’t have a tuba.Stay in Marching Band. Hear me out.It’s not about about your friends. It’s not about the quality of your music. It’s about your personal leadership skills and character. Here’s why:When I graduated, I got every single band award available. Why? Because I was the only one qualified; I was the only one who cared. I refused to jump ship just because my friends did.when I got to Cornell, they wanted me in the marching band because I could play Tuba. I was wayyyy worse than anyone else in band, from a musical perspective. But guess what? I was in a great environment of talented individuals and got way better musically in a short time. The music difficulty was way over my head. It was a great challenge. I couldn’t believe how much better I became.I got to watch sporting events and play music at Cornell… two of my favorite things! Band also needed leadership positions, so I became Treasurer for a year.I didn’t stay in band for my whole time at Cornell, and I learned way more from the experience than I did from the music.This is about much more than music or friendship. It’s about character—sticking with something even when everyone else drops out.Remember: the captain always goes down with the ship, leaders eat last, and any other sort of leadership cliche you can think of.It’s your call, but you have an easy choice to Establish your reputation, today, as someone who sticks with a challenge even when others quit.

Will being 1/16 native american help me get into college?

It makes no difference what you look like or how traditional you are.

If you are enrolled in a “Federally Recognized Tribe”. You can claim to be Native American..... You will be required to PROVE IT.... A "Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood" is generally accepted as proof of enrollment.

If you are NOT enrolled in a “Federally Recognized Tribe”. You can NOT claim to be Native American.
==============

It will not help you to get into college, but will allow you to compete for Native American scholarships.

Will being a minority student help me get into college?

It depends on the college, public schools in California and in Texas cannot use race as a factor in admissions (due to Prop. 209 in CA and Hopkins in TX). It also depends on what "other" is. Most colleges don't flag "other" students as underrepresented candidates - if you specifically indicate your race here I may be better able to answer your question. Most federal programs define underrepresented minorities as, African-American, Hipanic/Latino(a), Native American/ Alaska Native, Pacific Islander, Filipino. However, other universities do not have "quotas" per say, but will take into account what you could offer the campus as to contribute diversity and a broader range of backgrounds to their campus which may give you additional points in the admissions process (if you were an underrepresented minority - which may not have to be by the federally defined categories but by what is underrepresented at that school). I think a source link would be difficult to pin down for this because as I said, in most studies of university admissions practices, the "other"category is not used in the analysis of the data because it cannot be properly defines an may muddle the the results. If you'd like to learn more about why considering race in admissions isn't necessarily unfair, you may want to look at the book "The Shape of the River" by Bowen and Bok.
