Will You Be Arrested If You Stole From The Library

I stole library books because I wanted to read them over the summer. Do libraries check their books annually?

There is another way to steal books, and I was the victim of a little scam when I was in eighth grade in public school. The library was my safe haven. On the way home from school, I stopped in at the main branch to get a start on my homework. I wasn’t on a sports team, not my thing. I wasn’t part of the popular co-ed group that hung out at the soda fountain. My idea of school was to take notes in class, do my homework conscientiously, and study hard for tests. I read everything I could get my hands on and acquired countless vocabulary words. My English teacher Mrs. Walker had unusual ideas about teaching our grade. We studied classical literature beginning with Greek plays and Plato’s Dialogues. She was somewhat histrionic in her lectures as if she were on the stage in an ancient Greek amphitheater, looking to the skies, expressing herself with no inhibition to the multitudes. Many of my classmates rolled their eyes but I was mesmerized by the tragedies writ large by Sophocles, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Euripides. On one of my library afternoons, I found The Oedipus Cycle in the stacks—Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Kolonos, and Antigone. I read for hours until the librarian tapped me on the shoulder at closing time. Before I walked past the front desk, a good looking young man of about college age said, “Excuse me Miss, I forgot my library card, could you do me a favor and take out this book for me?”He caught me by surprise, I agreed, the librarian consummated the transaction, and he was gone with the book, all within a minute.I knew something wasn’t right, it worried me constantly for the next month. After one month, a postcard came to the house that the book was overdue. Too ashamed at what happened, I told my mom I forgot to return it and would take care of it right away. The next day, I took $8.00 of my babysitting money out of my drawer and paid the debt. It hurt, not just for loss of the hard-earned money at fifty cents an hour, but for the shame that I was an easy mark and fell for the set-up.Thirteen year old me, shouldn’t I be smarter? It seemed to me that such things should never happen in a sacred place where the written treasures of civilization and human intellectual accomplishment reside.

How many library books can i have overdue before the police arrest me?

No. The police won't ever arrest you for stealing library books.

What they will do, however, is take you to small claims court. Basically, they'll sue you. And they will win. There is proof that you checked out the books, since it was on your account that you signed up for. The books won't be cheap and you'll get a judgment against you that you'll need to satisfy. If you don't satisfy that judgment, there's the farfetched chance that they'll put a warrant out for you.

You won't ever go to prison. Prison is for felonies. This is a misdemeanor at the most, but I doubt it's even that.

Edit: To Bobby, I'm a lawyer. Clearly you don't have any grasp on what "theft" is. To the questioner, man up and just return those books. Whatever the result is, it isn't going to be positive.

Can the library put a warrant out on me for overdue library books?

I often wonder how true some of the tv sitcoms are when they show someone being arrested or taken to court over library fines or overdue library books.I cannot answer for every library out there, however, my libraries do not get law enforcement involved in overdue books or fines. Even if they are large. We do send your account to a collections agency in an attempt to get our material back and to get you to pay your fines (usually if it goes this far, you have been billed for a book). If you have lost a book or have a seriously over due book, go in and talk to someone at the library. That is my biggest frustration with people. Come and talk to me. I am not mean. I will not yell at you. I will not belittle you or make you feel terrible. Yes, you are ultimately responsible for the material and I might not be able to completely help you, but we can work something out. But I can’t do that if you don’t contact me!

Can I have more than one library card?

I am sure it's never illegal to have more than one library card, but I think it must be against library policy. At the library where I work, if we find out you have more than one card, we'll delete all but one of them from the system. I expect that most libraries will do that. In extreme cases where you're clearly abusing the system (repeatedly trying to sign up for multiple cards and running up huge fines on them, for instance) you might get banned from checking things out.

Of course, if there's more than one library system where you live, I am sure you can get one card from each system with no trouble.

Is it illegal for me to watch porn in the public library over their WIFI access on my own laptop?

yes it is illegal to expose porn or pornography material in puplic in some States

What would happen if I never return a book from a library?

At our library, we would send you several overdue notices. You would accrue daily fines for the book. Eventually, our Director has a day when she marks all the books that are overdue over a certain period of time (I don't know what it is-perhaps a year?) And she'll mark the books “Patron Lost” in the system. The next time you come in, your account would show a “fine” for the amount the book is worth - so you can replace it.Now, in our library, all you have to do to clear that fine is to replace the book. Even buying a “like new” copy on Amazon and bringing it in will suffice. I know other libraries have different rules as to fines and replacement policies, but these are ours. Also, we do not charge overdue fines if you are replacing the book.
