Will You Help Me With Starting A Newspaper

What tips do you have for starting a school newspaper?

I’ve never started a school newspaper, but I did start a town newspaper, so I’ll offer some advice since I was asked to answer. Most of this advice is specific to the USA.Determine if you’ll be an official school paper or an independent paper. If you’re official, you’ll probably get the use of a classroom to do editing and page layout, a faculty adviser and possibly get your printing bill paid for (if you have a print edition). If you’re independent, you don’t have these resources, but the school administration can’t meddle with your coverage. (State law might prevent the school administration from meddling with your coverage; the Student Press Law Center is a great resource for this.)If there’s a community newspaper in your area, reach out to the editor. The newspaper I started runs one page each month that’s edited by the high school newspaper staff. I promised them I’d run it with no interference unless there’s a problem of bad taste (which hasn’t come up) or a legal issue (which came up once — they didn’t realize that giving credit doesn’t get you out of a copyright issue). Most newspaper editors probably won’t be as helpful as I am to my local high school newspaper staff, but you never know until you ask.See what resources are available. I already mentioned the Student Press Law Center and your local newspaper editor, but your state newspaper association might offer help. If you’re starting a high school newspaper, the student paper at a nearby college might offer help.Consider the use of free software. When I started my newspaper, I used a free layout program called Scribus instead of paying hundreds of dollars for InDesign; I used GIMP instead of Photoshop, etc. I’ve since learned that InDesign is a far superior program, so I’d recommend using it if you can afford to, but Scribus will do the trick. Don’t use bootleg software — it’s illegal and unethical. But if you can get software free of charge legally, morally and ethically, consider whether paying for commercial software is worth it.Thanks for asking me to answer and good luck starting your paper.

I want to start a habit of reading newspapers daily. How is reading newspapers good for us?

Reading English Newspaper can help us improve our reading ability, learn more vocabulary and let us know what has happened in the world. We can read newspaper via the methods below: a. Turn to the front page. Read the headlines to know what has happened, because the most important things are put on the front page. b. Choose the first five articles that attract you. Then read the first two to three of them.  c. If you want to read more, you can turn to other columns, such as sport. Then choose the top five articles, read their title and the first paragraph. We can use these methods to reduce the time we read the newspapers meanwhile keep us informed of important events.

How should I develop a habit of reading the newspaper?

Picking a good newspaper is one of the most important starting points. Since you are in India, I would suggest you to start with The Hindu. Although it has its well known political biases, the content is of the highest quality. Wherever you are, find a newspaper that is worth reading. No point wasting time with trash.Pick a physical newspaper. Plenty of studies indicate a possible advantage of the physical format. Pick your main newspaper in the physical form and you can always read the rest on a tablet or PC. The Reading Brain in the Digital Age: The Science of Paper versus Screens Setup a routine/ritual. Any habit requires a rhythm. For me, waiting for my newspaperman right after brushing is my daily routine. Then I spend the next 45 min before between the time after brushing & before showering with the paper. Many erudite families sip their morning tea or coffee with their newspapers. Make it a group activity. Anything that is done alone can get boring. In my childhood, I used to read with my dad. After marriage, my wife and I devour every page of the Wall Street Journal or whatever other newspaper we subscribe. Find a partner - sibling, parent, spouse, friend - who also enjoys the broadsheet in their hands. Start from your most favorite sections. I used to start from the sports columns, during most of my school time. Do whatever to keep your interest. Every day try to read at least one news story that is not from your favorite section. Eventually you will build the tolerance to read stuff that is not your core strength.Pay attention to the stories. Most major newspapers have special features that mostly focus on stories. The stories might not be newsworthy otherwise, but still entertaining. If you are reading Hindu, you can find these in the Open Page. These are more light weight topics presented in a much more engaging form. The longer you spend on these pages, the stronger your reading habit will become. Write a summary. Writing is one of the best ways to keep the habit of reading. Pick your most favorite news story of the day and summarize that on your blog here on Quora. As you start writing, you will develop a deeper craving for reading. You will develop a greater appreciation for someone who creates those stories. You will retain it longer.

How should I approach magazines and newspapers if I am interested in writing a regular column for them?

I would like to understand if your passion is to write a column or write to reach people?Column WritingAssuming you’re talking about the column to reach the audience, the you must have a graduate degree in Journalism/Media & Communications/Psychology/Literature or any other course close to these areas. Writing a column is a whole another perspective of writing. You might want to read a lot of books like The Art of Column Writing, Deadline Artists, etc which will teach you how to understand your audience. After your basic home work, you might want to apply for a set of journalist internships. For example, The Hindu, TOI, etc call out for interns on a regualar basis. You will have to learn all about media through these internships. Later, you can slowly begin as associate production editor, then production editor which will lead you to be a sub-editor. This is when you can actually write columns. But the topics you’ll be dealing with in these columns are very sensitive and sensible. To write columns on any other topics would not be a risky job. If your approach is towards consumable content, you will have to start with digital marketing agencies or any other kind of production houses where your content is definitive.Know your AudienceAs you mentioned your reach is quite good amongst your circle, you might want to first try to target on another circle. Change your content style and theme and try to reach another set of audience. Take feedback from your existing readers, also from the next set of readers you’re targeting. This will make you understand about your skills in the particular area you see yourself.AnalysisAnalyse yourself on all these aspects, then look out for opportunities and go ahead to have a beautiful career.I hope this helped :)

HELP! Can you help me brainstorm ideas for our school newspaper?

The September Issue is the first issue so it's a pretty big deal. I'm supposed to come to class with ideas for stories. They can be current events, entertainment, or just fun stuff. But they have to be ideas that have enough information to have a whole article written about them. Plus, it's for a high school newspaper so the topics need to be interesting or helpful to teens.

I'm desperate so any ideas will help! thanks so much!

Is reading newspapers good for improving English?

Yes and no.I can share my own experience with you.I was learning English myself long time ago. There was no YouTube or podcasts at that time. But there was plenty to read online. So, I started to read NY Times, LA Times, British newspapers almost daily.Yes, it did help me to some extent to improve my vocabulary. But there are two reasons to keep reading in moderation:(1) You need to start speaking, understanding and writing English. Reading does not help you. In fact, it drives you into belief that you will never start speaking. If you only read, and don't communicate.(2) They use a lot of slang and specific terminology in newspaper articles. If you focus on translating every single word, it is not the time well-spent, because you won't see these words in daily conversations or e-mails.So, again, yes and no. Read a lot to improve your vocabulary. But don't focus on reading only, because it is not the same as communication.
