Why do my lips feel swollen and dry?

You say you aren’t allergic to anything. The thing is you may be and not know it. Sometimes we have low level allergies that we never notice because we aren’t exposed to them enough. But if you are exposed to a few of these all at once, or have conditions, (such as dry air) that sensitizes your skin, then suddenly those allergies you didn’t know you had flare up.You also stated that you use tons of Blistex and lip moisturizers. You may be allergic, or at least sensitive, to one or more of the ingredients in those. An interesting thing about lip moisturizers, Chapstick, Blistex, lip gloss, lipstick etc., especially if they are also flavored, is that they actually make people tend to lick their lips more. It’s an unconscious act. When we lick our lips, the evaporation of the saliva draws away even more moisture. So they feel drier. So we apply more. Which makes us lick our lips, which makes them drier…. It’s a vicious circle.Something else to keep in mind, which as been mentioned, is if you are exfoliating your lips, you are making skin that is already sensitized, even more irritated. This, along with any sensitivities to ingredients, could account for the swelling. What has worked for me when my lips have become severely dry and chapped is plain old Vaseline aka petroleum jelly. I slather it on before bed. After doing this for a night or two, my lips feel normal again. It acts as a lipid barrier, so it prevents moisture loss, is heavy enough to not wear off during sleep. Since you’re asleep, and it has no flavor, there isn’t the tendency to keep licking one’s lips.Of course if you have a sensitivity to petroleum jelly, this will not work for you. You could try doing a patch test first. Apply it to the inside of your wrist or elbow before bed. Wait 24 hr.s and if there’s no signs of reaction, it should be safe.If the cracking and swelling do not respond, or they get worse, see a doctor as you may have some sort of underlying medical condition as the cause.
