Contrary to some other answers, you can apply for General Skilled Migration while on a student visa. This is because the General Skilled Migration does not require you to be on-shore of off-shore at the time of your application. You can be anywhere and move to and from Australia numerous time, without your GSM application process being affected. One important thing: you cannot have intention to apply for another visa at the time of lodgement of your student visa application. Student Visa (Australia)?

No you cannot. You can expect to earn a maximum (if you are lucky) of 200-300 a week. Which is a little less than what you need for living expenses (share accommodation is around 200 a week - not including food, internet, electricity, travel (and you will need to travel as the cheap accommodation is not where the jobs are). If you are female and go into prostitution (which many of the international students from the subcontinent do) you will earn enough for living expenses. You will not be able to earn in addition to this, the money required to pay the uni fees.

Australians who work FT hours cannot earn enough to pay the FT upfront fees that they need to pay to do a Masters degree at night even considering their fee is 1/2 or less the international fee. They have to do 1 subject a semester (and not 4) or get their job to pay for it - and they are professionals. Its not possible to even think an unskilled job that an international student will be able to do this, when a professional Australia cannot (which is why the high % of Indian nationality prostitutes around universities).
