How do you approach facing your fears? IE a skydive if afraid of heights

My fear of heights and jumping with a parachute was overcome by through application of what the instructor taught in U.S. Army jump school, complete trust in all the equipment we were issued and the weeks of training and physical conditioning endured in the summer heat of Georgia. We were young, in peak condition and finally, we jumped because we were afraid the sergeant would kick our ass if we didn’t.Truthfully, we were more afraid of what our comrades would think of us, the humiliation of quitting after all that training, and the harassment imposed on quitters while they were waiting for a transfer out of the unit. Fear is a great motivator but not the far of falling out of an aircraft and waiting for a parachute to blossom. The fear of what family, friends and fellow trainees would think of our failure to conquer the fear and become a quitter.Quitters were removed from the unit immediately, segregated and placed on the worst details imaginable, such as 18 hours shifts digging a hole and then covering it up again. A detail to kitchen duty where they were given 18 hour shifts of cleaning tile floors, scrubbing pots and pans and having a guard assigned to them 24 hours a day, as if they were criminals. Some broke and rejoined their unit, making the required jumps to earn the coveted parachutist badge. Others simply disappeared and were assigned to regular units. We never heard from them again. The odds are very good that a jump will go off without a hitch. A few, unlucky ones for whatever reason, get hurt, some badly and are crippled. It happens. It happened to me later, after training and unexpectedly but I have never regretted the experience of becoming part of an elite team of young, bright eyed infantry, ready to take on whatever the world had to offer. Nothing in life was more challenging nor prepared me better for the rigors I would face than that singularly, intense and frightfully challenging training and experience of US Army jump school, during one, long and hot summer, in a place called, Fort Benning, Georgia.

I've always had the fear of heights but I'm planning to skydive soon, how does it feel to skydive with fear of heights?

I am a complete wimp, I hate heights and flying but well after a bit of wimping out I finally got in the plane and was terrified the whole way up!..... But once up there you have no depth perception so your brain can't comprehend the 'height', also as the aircraft travels forwards at speeds upward of 80/90 mph when you leave the aircraft you do not feel like you're falling as you first need to deaccelarate going forwards before you start accelerating straight down. This gives you a floating feeling on leaving the plane and once in freefall there is not ground rush sensation as your still so very high up, by the time you realise the ground is coming closer your parachute is fully open and your coming into land. Anyway after my first jump I was hooked, 15 years on and I still love it, love the sport and people, skydivers really are the nicest bunch of people in the world you'll ever meet.Good luck :)

Can skydiving help you get over a fear of heights?

Sometimes. It could help you. Are you tandem jumping? Why put yourself through that? I guess you could try it. What if you cry and scream and act all crazy when you are about to jump? If you try this…you have to let us know what happens next? Conquering your fear is great. However I think you should do it in increments like climb up high places, hang out on rooftops, and gently push yourself to conquer your fear. If you want to sky dive…don’t go alone. Tandem Jump. This way he can focus on the jump and opening up the parachute correctly. Everyone is afraid of sky diving at first but it could be very fun!

How do I get over my fear of heights in bouldering?

I used to be absolutely terrified of climbing auto-belays. I would always triple or quadruple check my connecting clips before letting go every time. At some point I guess o realized that I was just being silly seeing as after having let go so many dozens of times without ever having found something wrong before coming down.Even after six / seven years of climbing I still get nervous on those last four clips while lead climbing. That first while trying to do new types of climbing such as bouldering, it is more than normal to be afraid, you just have to make sure that you push through that so you can enjoy the discipline. The best way to get past that fear of heights is to practice falling higher and higher up the wall and when you climb up higher than you're comfortable do not feel bad about down climbing. Make sure when you land on your feet that you bend your knees and roll onto your back, this will help a lot with feeling comfortable. In the end, top roping or other climbing really isn't going to help that much in being less afraid of bouldering; you just need to get on that bouldering wall a couple times every session until you're comfortable with it.

Is Skydiving/HALO jumping really that scary?

I'm also scared of heights. Really scared. For example, when I watch that video of the guy climbing to the top of the really high tower to change bulbs, I feel like crying.

However, when I went skydiving (tandem), the only scary moment was the first 3 or 4 seconds of the jump. Freefall is fun, like being in a wind tunnel, and since you're so high up you don't have a point of reference to get the sense that you're falling.

Why did I jump when I'm deathly afraid of heights? It was an important milestone birthday, and I wanted to celebrate by doing something that scared me to death.

How do hikers get over their fear of heights, say on an exposed cliff face?

There is a certain amount of fear that is healthy, if one wants to remain alive. A hiker should not push past his or her fear, since fear usually also indicates wisdom regarding one’s abilities or lack of them.I love going on trails on Mt. Rainier that take me to an “edge” but I always maintain a healthy respect for the edge and choose to keep a healthy distance. There’s no wisdom in being stupid.
