In addition, well made padded straps. You're going to be lugging this around, you want something comfortable. Also look for an additional mid-section style strap. Make sure this is well built and robust. Also you want some water-resistance in the bag. Some look for ventilation, honestly it's something I don't stress over much, but this is because for the most part I'm only totting my bag from my car to the office or classroom. I'm not walking home with it on my back. But if you're going to be doing a lot of walking, ventilation is a factor. Is the vera bradley 'vera' a good school bag?
I think the Vera would be PERFECT for school use! its cute, light weight, durable, affordable and will carry everything you will need. Also you could always find another use for it during the summer such as a pool bag or sleep over bag etc. the zip id case is also great and cute you could put your school ID in the front with lunch money gift cards change an stuff in the back. My daughter had money stolen out of her bag at school?
I just wanted to add some details before I picked a best answer. I'm an American living in Europe so, I know the culture differences. Europeans tend to give children more responsibility and not to baby them as much as Americans. I'm not saying this is good or bad. I see it has advantages and disadvantages. Anyway, I wasn't really upset about the amount of money so, "I got over it" as one user pointed out. I'm more worried that someone is rifling through every kid's schoolbag! All the kids have a day when they have to bring in their money for cocoa for the month. Now that isn't cheap and the teacher wants the children to have the responsibility of handing her the money. And I would be really mad if that gets stolen. I can afford 2 Euro. But, I can't afford for cocoa money to go missing as I have 2 children and various other things to pay for. Besides, we are talking about 8 year olds! Someone already becoming a criminal at 8 years old is ridiculous! Thanks everyone for the answers!

How can i make a rock costume for a school play out of garbage bags?
I think the trash bag might 1.) look too much like a trash bag and 2.) seem too 'shiny' to be a rock But if you really wanna go with the bag... I would stuff balloons inside the bag with her, that way the bag dont lay flat, it will hold some kind of shape. I wish there was some other kind of affordable material that you might use instead of a plastic bag. Initially when you said a rock, I was thinking brown PAPER sacks could be crumpled, not have that shiny sheen of plastic and look like a pretty good rock. Paper sacks could be obtained from a grocery store. I would cut them down the seem to lay them flat, tape them together and try to paint the whole thing a dull black (flat Paint) then crumple the sack material and somehow tape her up into it. If all that paper is too heavy n drags the papers crumples down, stuff those balloons inside w/ her to retain a bulkier shape of a rock. Make sure she has a way to set down in it, that means no balloons near her bottom to prevent her from resting. Oh and when she is in her rock costume, make sure you tell her, "Baby, YOU ROCK!"
