Would You Get Your Nails Done By A Tech Who Is Not Qualified But There Work Is Good

Do you tip nail technicians that work out of their home?

Yes, you tip her. Although $40 seems a bit steep for nails..maybe she built in her own tip.

Linda, you're wrong in this context. There is a difference between being a self-employed sole proprietor and owning a salon that employs other service providers. By the way, the majority of salon workers are self-employed anyways. They lease a chair/table and are not paid a wage.

Do hair stylists make THAT much more than nail technicians?

it depends really, there arnt as many different things a nail technitian can do where there are hundreds of different services a hair dresser can do. nail products are much more expencive as well even when bought in bulk where a stylist needs all the electricals that last for ages and the products are much cheaper to. the real money is when you do both and go mmobile, i.e, being hired to go to a bride to be's house, doing a test run for hair and make up and doing nails, and then going back on the day to do it again. just for a 3 hour session of trial styling can range from £50 to £200 and then theres when you need to go for the brides actual day and that costs more. not to mention there are always the bridesmaids which mobile tecnicians/stylists can charge anything from £30 to £150 per bridesmaid. there is alot of money in the industry, its just getting the qualifications and getting good at it and there fore, getting your reputation high.

Eyelash extensions at a nail salon?

I'm thinking about getting eyelash extensions and I was walking by a nail salon the other day and they were advertising eyelash extensions for $60. I've seen eyelash extions before and I think they look awesome... But I'm a little unsure about getting them done at a nail place. I know high end salons do them and they are very expensive, but I'm curious if the nail salons are somewhat comparable. Has anyone gotten them done at a nail place and can give me some insight??

Does getting acrylic nails hurt, and does it damage your natural nails?

As a nail tech, I would just like to point out a couple of things.
If getting your nails done causes you pain in any way, and/or your nails are damaged in the process, then you are going to a bad tech. Nail services should NEVER hurt in any way. Ever.
In most cases, the technicians who work at discount salons (Think Walmart's Regal Nails) are not experienced, are often untrained, and many times unlicensed. Thus, they are usually not qualified to do your nails. Add to that fact this point: They charge very low prices. In order to keep those prices low, and still make a profit, they do things which are not in the best interest of the client. One of those things is the use of the cheapest acrylic prioducts available, and often those products contain MMA. MMA is a substance which has been banned for for use on nails for over 20 years, and it WILL ruin your nails.Even worse, it can cause serious health problems. They still use this substance because it is a fraction of the cost of the approved products which good, reputable salons use. And, since MMA does not adhere well to the natural nail, they use a Dremel drill (NOT for use on nails, and illegal for such use in many states). To make it adhere, they will 'etch' your nails (rough them up) quite badly. For those of you who say that your nails are ruined from filing them, this is most often the reason why. A drill should never be used on your natural nails. Nor should MMA.
See this video for more information on MMA, and also the other link on the dangers of discount nail salons because of their well known unsanitary, and often dangerous, and illegal practices:

In short, getting acrylic nails done by a licensed, well trained, and experienced nail tech will not hurt you, nor will it damage your nails (in most cases anyway). Many people think that it is the acrylic which ruins your nails, and cheap products with MMA will do just that.It is often a bad tech who will ruin your nails.
