you can spend as much(or as little) time as you want on Alcatraz. the ferries run every 20 minutes back and forth. The audio tour is VERY informative and you can take it at your own pace, as you are given your own personal set of headphones. Think we spent a couple, maybe three hours there. or you could skip the audio tour and just wander around reading the signs. but I don't recommend that. The audio tour really brings it to life, and is narrated by actual former inmates and officials. one of the docents is the daughter of one of the Officials, and she grew up on the island.

Not all Grand Canyon Tours and companies are the same. Have a look at any of the big travel sites (search the main engines for "grand canyon tours"); you’ll notice they cram over 50 to 100 tours on their pages. What is happening here is the tour seller is using multiple operators (the ones who perform the mode of transportation) to take care of the tour. If Company A is sold out for the tour, then Company B gets the sale. This is crazy! The tour seller is using every operator in this town, thinking they are offering a huge selection to their customers with always-available product. What this does is, it confuses the customer. The customer sees four or five different versions of the same tour. The customer doesn't know what tour operator is superior, so there is a great chance they are traveling with one of the inferior operators in this town (and yes there are lousy operators in Las Vegas). A friend of mine took a tour with a company there that only specializes in high-end premium tours. They are Paradise Found Tours if memory serves me well. They only use one operator per type of tour. And that operator is simply the BEST in the industry. What makes these tour operators so different from one another? For example: Helicopter Company A, has a different landing with a different view (it can be dramatically different from other landing views), food, type of craft, pilot personality/knowledge at the Grand Canyon than Helicopter Company B, C, D. Helicopter Company A has; gourmet food, a superior view from their private landing pad, the aircraft is newer and retrofitted with more features, the pilots are more likeable and knowledgeable. And most importantly a superior safety record. I'd highly recommend Paradise Found Tours for a variety of Grand Canyon tours, Las Vegas tours and Hoover Dam tours. These tours are personally selected for spectacular scenery, adventure, comfort, safety, and personal attention.
