Wrist And Hand Seize Up

Tattoo Symbol for 'seize the day'?

You know that scene in Dead Poet's Society where Robin William's character is talking about carpe diem and he's like "live your life because we're all just food for worms" or something like that? Maybe you could do like a hand or something turning into dirt with worms crawling in it, like deteriorating from the wrist. Haha kind of morbid, but oh well :)
Also, the Roman poet Catullus was one of the first to write about the concept of carpe diem when he was telling his kinda-lover to shower him with kisses and stuff because he didn't know if the sun would rise tomorrow, it's really sweet. So maybe a sunset?
The phrase itself came from another Roman poet, Horace. His quote:
"Dum loquimur, fugerit invida
Aetas: carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero"
Basically "while we're talking, time flies: seize the day, don't put trust in the future"
Makes me picture a clock with wings and a butterfly net haha!

Wrist and hand seize up?

Hello!

For a couple of years now, I've been having this periodic problem where, when I use my hands/wrists too much, or grip things too hard/too long, my wrist and hand will seize up. By this, I mean that my hand will lock into a tight fist (can't even pry my fingers open with the other hand), my wrist will curl in, and the pain is so severe I nearly pass out. If I massage my forearm with my other hand, I can slowly loosen it up and be able to move it again, but very stiffly and painfully. Some things that bring on these spells are typing, driving in stressful situations (when I'm "white-knuckle driving"), or trying to open a jar, for example.

I had been diagnosed with tendinitis seven or eight years ago, and I'm not sure if this is related. (I am also theorizing carpal tunnel, but I'm not sure, since I don't have the weakening muscles.)

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. :) thanks!

To Christians ? an open Challenge ?

In Deuteronomy 33:2, we see Moses peace be upon him predicting that GOD Almighty will execute His Holy Judgement in the city of Paran by 10,000 of Believers:

"And he said, The LORD came from Si'-nai, and rose up from Se'-ir unto them; he shined forth from mount Pa'-ran [Mecca in Arabic], and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them. (From the King James Version Bible, Deuteronomy 33:2)

We also read about the same prophecy by Prophet Enoch peace be upon him:

"And Enoch [Idris in Arabic, one of Allah Almighty's Prophets peace be upon all of them to the people of Israel.] also, the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard [speeches] which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. (Jude 1:14-15)"

Now, according to the history, the city of Mecca (Paran) was liberated by Prophet Muhammad's 10,000-men army. (army against idols worshiper)

Now, since these prophecies were foretold in the Bible's Old Testament, I would like to openly challenge any Jewish Rabbi or Christian Priest or Minister to answer the following question for me:

Where in the Bible do we see any Prophet executing the Judgement of GOD Almighty specifically in the city of Paran (Mecca, the city that Abraham took Hagar and Ishmael to) ?

If your engine seized, will it turn over at all?

If your engine seized, will it turn over at all?  It depends on why it seized and which components seized.  Back in the 1980s I had a car engine seize on me because of a blockage in one of the oil ways, which lead to a big end bearing seizing onto the crankshaft.  The engine suddenly changed note, lost all power, and I could see a trail of smoke behind me.  As soon as I depressed the clutch to free-wheel to a halt, the engine simply stopped, seized solid, and all attempts at restarting it didn't turn the crankshaft in the slightest.  Even a very long handled spanner on the front pulley bolt wouldn't budge it.  However after half an hour or so, when the engine had cooled down, it did restart, but with the accompaniment of a horrendous - and expensive - knocking sound from the bottom end, but at least I was able to drive the couple of miles back home, very slowly...  If it's one of the piston rings which has seized, or perhaps a bearing on a camshaft, you could well find the engine seized up permanently though.  The only reason I was able to eventually restart mine was because the white metal lining to the big end bearing had melted out, so a gap was left after it had cooled.

My finger seized up and wouldn't move?? What's going on?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually linked to alot of typing on a keyboard causing finger numbness. The carpal tunnel is located under your wrist and it is like a tube. The tube holds and protects the main nerve leading to the hand and your tendons. Pressure placed on the nerve causes symptoms such as finger numbness just like you experienced. I have had this condition for years and it does cause numbness in the fingers and for me, quite painful at times.

There are braces that you can buy at your local pharmacy for this type of condition and you can use it even if you type and can support your wrist. My doctor recommended this and also told me I needed to rest my wrist intermittently during typing or using the wrist alot. If this worsens you may want to see your physician in order to get his/her diagnosis and treatment. This condition can worsen so if you catch it early and treat it you may prevent having to seek surgical treatment which is something I have avoided by doing what my doctor recommended.

Take care.

Can meth cause numbness in the arm or hand?

As the poison chemicals start (immediately too!) destroying & disintegrating fine muscles, nerves, tendons, tissue, brain cells and internal organs, peripheral neuropathy is a certain outcome. Haven’t you ever observed the wibbly wobbly behavior (all shaky and unsteady) of a “tweaker”?

Why should the fingers be flat in a knife hand strike?

Richmond and Shen are both correct. On the one hand, most folks don’t fully straighten your fingers. On the other hand, if you fully curled them up, it’d be a hammerfist and not a knifehand. Why don’t we often see things “in the middle”? Well, first of all, as Shen said, the natural benefit of the knifehand is to concentrate force, and the the natural advantage of the hammerfist is its stability. Something in the middle has neither advantage. The fingers are sort of dangling awkwardly.Second, they do exist if you look hard enough. There’s some sort of a hand position in a kung fu style I once encountered where they figured, I guess, that you can strike as if with a fist, but then still be able to “hook” or “seize” because while the knuckles are bent at about 90 degrees, the interphalangeal joins are more extended and the hand is sort of open. Weird, huh?The reason it’s weird, and the reason not a lot of folk do this , has to do with the final reason. The muscles that extend and flex (“straighten” and “curl”) the fingers are located in the forearm. They have tendons that run through the wrist into the digits like cables, or puppet strings. So they have a role in stabilizing the wrist. If you strike with your knifehand, the impact moves the wrist joint into abduction (i.e. bends the hand in the direction of the thumb). To stabilize the wrist, many of the muscles whose tendons cross the wrist need to engage. When you tighten them up well, you’ll usually let either the flexors or the extensors predominate. If the extensors predominate, you’ve got a knifehand. If the flexors predominate, you’ve got a hammerfist.

My right wrist hurts when I lift heavy weight and it's almost an instant sharp pain when I arm wrestle. How can I fix this?

There are quite a few potential helps here people have answered. In terms of getting it better, try this first: interlace the fingers of your left hand with those of the right, both hands in front of you and fingers pointing away from you. Grip the fingers of the right hand tightly and pull outwards along the length of that forearm using the left arm, as you pull back with the right… just enough to cause the wrist joint capsule to expand - not too hard. You can also do the same giving the problem wrist a bit of a wiggle. See if any shift helps. Just a thought. I do it myself sometimes at the mo. :)If it persists, as has been helpfully suggested, look at your technique for what you're doing to make sure it's bio-mechanically sound, as well as any potential strengthening exercises. But first and foremost, give it a bit of a rest until it stops hurting, see a doctor/physiotherapist if possible/necessary (especially if they're involved with sports) and try to make sure you're getting some good stock/broth in your diet to support the joints/tendons/ligaments/cartilage; also enough good butter and oily fish. Have a look at Scott Sonnon's joint mobility program “Intu-Flow" on YouTube, too: the exercises are very good for joint mobility and health, soft, elastic tissue, myofascia, coordination. They fit in a sequence but of course include the wrist. You can even take just the wrist ones at the moment.Various herbal supplements might generally support, too; Maca, Pine Pollen, Glucosamine, Chondroitin…Cissus Quadrangularis was one I once saw mentioned rather positively. I once recommended someone years ago Glucosamine after he'd had cruciate ligament surgery and months of discomfort following and whether it was the Glucosamine (which often comes bottled with Chondriotin added) or not, he certainly found his knee better not long after.I pray it’s better soon. Maintain best practices when it's fine to keep it fine. Take care.

Why does a wrist tendon injury hurt more immediately after waking up? (Assuming I sleep proper with wrists not in awkward positions)?

I’m going to guess four reasons: If a car sits for a couple of years, the lack of motion and lubrication causes the engine to seize up. Likewise, as you car sits in the garage at night, all the oil drips out of the moving parts of the engine and into the oil pan. When you start it, the pump pumps the oil back into the moving parts. As you sleep, the synovium fluid (lubricant) which is also in the sheath your tendon is in, dries up or pools away from the tendon causing it to be sluggish to move in the morning. Just a guess. This is why an injured person should never wear braces or splints because the body is designed to move PROPERLY. Not not move. Any doctor who prescribes a brace is an idiot. He should be prescribing movement re-education for proper movement promotes healing. Two, if you have scar tissue, overnight the tissue can adhere to the sheath walls like cobwebs. When you first move, you tear those little tethers away from the tendon or sheath. Just a guess.Three, after a day of wear and tear, while lying motionless all night, the body rushes fluid to the site of damage and the inflamation makes it difficult for the tendons to glide effortlessly through the sheath. Like spraining your ankle and it swells up, it is nature’s cast. Just a guess.Four, aw no . . . I forgot number four. Maybe it will come back to me if I go make a milkshake . . . . nope.
