Manuscript Writing/Book Publishing?

How hard is it to actually get a book published? If your manuscript is well-written and submitted correctly, what are the chances that it will actually be published? I really want to write a book about a subject that I am extremely dedicated to and not a lot of information exists about it, but I'm afraid it would be a waste of time. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks much!

How does one find a literary agent who is ready to help you publish your novel?

I tried to look up Amanda "Binky" Urban on writers.net and nothing came up. Binky Urban is a superstar agent in the literary world. If she can't be found on the list then I don't know that writers.net is the place that you should be looking. I'm not saying that you should try to submit to the biggest agents out there, I'm just saying that a writer resource site that doesn't list the big shots might be in some need of some updating. I also tried to look up Nathan Bransford of Curtis Brown, Ltd. and nothing showed up. On the other hand I was able to find Jessica Faust and Jonathan Lyons.

Here's the deal. If your at the stage where you are ready to start querying agents you need to purchase a copy of Writer's Market 2008. It contains the listings of agents and publishers across the US. It also contains some very valuable information about writing great query letters, book proposals and more. It only costs $20 on amazon.com.

I go into more detail at this link: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

Hint: Nathan Bransford normally responds to queries on the same day: http://nathanbransford.blogspot.com/ Be SURE to read "The Essentials" links in the right hand column BEFORE you submit. If you really want to up your chances read through his blog archives so that you can really get a feel for what he is like and what he likes. He also has links to other agents/agencies in the right hand column. You could submit to them as well. Remember that every agent has their own specific submissions guidelines that they expect you to follow exactly.

How do you get your writing published?

Most would-be authors who have never published try to do so too soon. They write and polish their ms, and then think that they're ready to publish. They're not even close. If you want to publish successfully, you need to know your market segment, and your target readers, extremely well. So, the next step is to do that research. Obviously, you'd never write a book unless you had read dozens of the best selling competitors to yours, but now you need to analyze who's buying them, how many are being bought, and most importantly, why. Doing this will then prepare you for the next step: writing your marketing plan. Describe your target buyers and their motivation for reading books like yours  in detail. For example, if it's a military space opera, you might describe the typical reader as a young person, often male, with interests in STEM subjects, who is looking for vicarious validation and escapist adventure. Having done that, you then look for places where your target readers can be found in large (10,000+) numbers. Assess what type of things attract their attention in those places, and whose voices are respected. Plan what types of articles, posts, comments, or other messages you can place there which will show (not tell) your target readers that you offer what they want, and also plan your bio, tagline, profile or other information that will leave a trail of breadcrumbs that they can follow to your books. AFTER all of that, then you're ready to review your ms with an eye to inserting "hooks" on which you can hang publicity stories or other articles, adjusting the book so that there are excerpts you can place as second serial rights sales, and various other things that will help you sell the book. Also think long and hard about whether or not you can re-tune the ms to deliver more of what your readers really want from books like yours. Having done all of that, you give the ms another final pass to remove all errors and polish the last roughnesses out. NOW you're ready to write your query letter and submit, or to start the self-publishing process. Best of luck.

Do you know anything about these publishers?

I am a 15 year old writer. I am currently in the process of writing a fiction novel that i would like to get published. I'm not someone who wants to publish a book just to scratch it off of my bucket list. I am actually very serious about getting it published.

I did some research online and found a few publishers that I would like to know more about before I send anything to them.

- Olympia Publishers
- DAW
- Deeds Publishing

Please let me know if you know anything about them. (If they scam you, are vanity publishers, etc.)

Also, if you know of any other publishers that are good and will publish fiction novels that you do NOT need an agent for.

Thank you in advance. :)
