Writing A Short Story

Advice on writing a short story?

I have to write a short story. Problem is, I've never written one before, I don't write fiction, I'm not a great writer of any kind, and I really don't have much of an idea on what to write. I don't even read short stories that often. But write one I must.

The good news is, it's not due until May 1st, so I have some time to work with, although it won't all be devoted to writing and rewriting said story.

Now, to the writers and short story aficionados, what should I know beforehand? About brainstorming, planning, plotting, writing, editing, anything and everything? Do I need to eat special waffles, or inject myself with creative juices each morning? Will wearing my lucky rocket ship underwear help me get good ideas, or will I have to do handstands for that?

Thank you.

How long should it take to write a short story?

This is to create the best possible story one can. From my perspectives, I think a short story is something not more than 20 pages at the most and within 10 pages at an average. There is another category, Flash fictions, which are essentially stories narrated within 2000 words (about 3–4 pages max)For a flash fiction:1 day to imagine the story and create events in a structured manner in your mind1 day to write down all your thoughts1 day for editing your story3 days at tops, by one day I don’t mean the full day, just a few hours that day. All three steps can be done withing a single day in a matter of 4–5 hours on an average but for the best quality output breaks are necessary. Continually working may dry up your creativity and expression. For short stories:I guess about a week in the similar manner should be enough.Remember, the best stories are the ones that probably would have been edited like a 100 times taking care of every corner of the page and every single shortcoming.Once you have the base story it is recommended to spend more time on editing it, at least 2–3 days. Our ideas keep evolving. These insights are from my experiences. Different people will have different limits and potential. For me, a flash fiction will take about 2 days to complete, often I come back to it after a gap of 1 month to edit is again and make it better, after I receive feedback from my circle of readers. For a short story, it’s about a week.

How do I start writing short stories?

Begin with a story. Write it down. It's that simple and that complicated.LOTS of writers HATE their first drafts and will not show them to anyone. That's why they're called "first drafts". Because there will be second, third, fourth and more drafts. Forget about "perfect". There is no such thing. There is only "satisfactory to you". Show what you're happy with to other people who write, trade notes and critiques, take the suggestions you think are worthwhile and use them, discard the ones you don't find value in. It's your story and you are the only one who can tell it.I suggest you start with a story from your own life. It could be about something a relative taught you that had an appreciable impact on your life later, or the first time you triumphed over a fear you had.A story needs conflict to be interesting. What conflict are you writing about? Is it about how your relative's advice helped you to navigate a moral quandary (the conflict), or is it about how you engaged in a battle against your own fear (the conflict) to accomplish a goal or grow in some other way?Do you have a theme in mind? A theme is what you want to state as an idea to the reader, without being stated explicitly. It might be "Grandparents have a lot to teach us about the present" or "Unknown fears are worse than known fears". You'll have to make this theme clear through use of narrative and it can be tricky. You won't have to invent characters since they already exist in your life (you can rename them), and the events can simply be re-told in a simple narrative style. Be descriptive with feelings, smells, colors. A reader should ideally be able to sense what you were sensing as you tell the story. And, the more honest you are, the more likely you are to be able to connect with readers, since humans have a lot of experiences in common even though their backgrounds may be very different. Honesty tends to bridge the superficial gaps.Start with a first draft. Re-write it. Re-write it again. Keep re-writing until the story says exactly what you had intended it to say. But do it. That's the only way to really begin.

How can i re- write a short story into a poem.?

Poems can follow all kinds of formats, and unless your assignment tells you specifically what kind, you are free to create anything! Find the key story-telling points of your short story, the things that if left out would leave a hole in how it goes. Write down this list of points in the order they happen. You can go through each line of your list, and play with the words a little, exchange blah adjectives like "scary" with words like "horrific," "terrifying" etc. You can make the last words of each line, or point, rhyme,or alternate the rhyme to every other line. (Rhyming, by the way, is optional!) You can play with the story structure as well as the words you use to tell it, like telling Red Riding Hood from the Woodcutter's point of view, or beginning your poem with the end of the story, and going back to tell the tale. Have fun with this, you have a chance not to follow someone else's rules for once! Hope this helps:)

I have to write a short story on "Ambition"?

I have to write a short story for English at school, reflecting on the theme of "Ambition".

If you have any suggesstions please share them with me! I really want to do well on this task!

So I have 45 minutes to write a short story, we get given a title and write about 2 pages- how do I plan it?

Develop a character. Your story should include people. Describe their hair color, eye color, shape of their eyes, lips, length of hair, body type or weight, how they walk, their height, their accent or how they talk, their smell or perfume, Are they loud and arrogant, or bashful and quiet, Does the room light up when they walk in or do people tend to not notice them, do people run from them when they walk into the room, why?

Talk about the setting. Is it warm, cold, snowing, raining, cloudy, windy? Are you on the beach, in the mountains, on a plain, the desert? What kind of trees are nearby, is it grassy, has the grass been recently mowed, does the wind blow sand in the characters eyes? What does the air smell like ? Does it remind you of grandma's house on a special holiday or your own home on laundry day? Maybe it smells like a cow field or musty stream?

What about the drama that's going on? Do the characters like where they are located? Why or why not? Do they like one another?

What are they doing? Are they doing this efficiently or do they need help? Are they happy or sad about this?
