It could be that your laser is misaligned and needs repair by Microsoft. But before you send it in, try cleaning the laser lens with a standard CD/DVD lens cleaning disk and see if that helps. As a temporary fix, try tapping lightly on top of the console when it is trying to read the disk (when it is making the noise right after you put a disk in). I don't know why, but you can find youtube videos showing this and I've seen it work myself.

These are the steps that work best for me: 1. Is it with black ops only or all of your games? If it is only one game try cleaning the disc with a disc cleaning solution or glass cleaner. If cleaning it doesn't work take it back to the retailer you bought it from and you should be able to exchange it for no cost no problems. 2. If it happens with all of your discs, try starting the Xbox without the hard drive attached. Sometimes this fixes the problem, but usually not. the "love tap" worked . . . although it keeps sticking, with or without a disc in it. Seems to be no burrs anyway. I've used this thing almost nonstop for a year, maybe the tray is just getting tired?

Yeah, this happened to me before, it's just the the disc-reading lazer is jammed. The solution is simple, but sounds a bit stupid. Put the disc in the tray, close it, and as soon as it closes start tapping on the Xbox directly above the tray. Not too hard, yet not too soft. It sounds ridiculous, but the tapping "dislodges" the lazer and gets it working. You can search this up on YouTube aswell, you'll find a video called "Fixing 360 Disc-Reader" or something

i would hate to say this but... you have to buy a new xbox or get the lazer arm replaced. it costs at least $2000 to get the lazer arm replaced. i would recommend buying a new xbox. did you know that there $199 now?

Okay... On the back of the laser, above the little 'data' cable connected to the circuit board under the laser (NOT Sata cable btw) Anyway, above the data cable, there are two small screw's, you want to adjust the left screw a tiny bit, and test the xbox, if it doesn't work, keep tinkering with that screw and perhaps the right screw if your give up with the left. Eventually, you will be able to play games! hooray, well done. BEFORE you try this, I would like to suggest that you get an alcohol solution and clean the laser thoroughly.
XBox 360 Open Tray Error Help?
Disc won’t work in XBox 360? It says open tray even though there’s a disc inside. The disc isn’t even dirty or scratched! I tried the websites and the disc still won’t work. The DVD is brand new and I just used a different one last night and it did fine! I always use discs and put them into my XBox. I can watch something else but then, the disc will just be turned into shelf clutter if I can’t watch it. I don’t want to use my mom’s because, my mom and that’s for another story. 1) I dusted/cleaned the tray 2) I cleaned off the disc 3) Knocked on the XBox 4) Blew into the XBox 5) Retried many, MANY times

The metal contacts to receive power on the Xbox 360's lasers tend to corrode over time, causing less power to be given to the laser. You can do a laser tweak to decrease the resistance of the potentiometer on the laser to force more power into the laser. It does shorten the lifespan of your Xbox, mine just died a few weeks ago, after doing the tweak about 3 years ago. Youtube will help you a lot on this. It's a fairly simple fix and possibly the only one.
