Dealing with nasty and ungrateful family member at Christmas?
Hi there, I know this question is pretty early on in the year, but I’d like some help or information before Christmas. My brother (36) always ruins family gatherings at Christmas. Last year, mum invited him round for dinner, like we always do, and he was (reluctantly) opening his presents. He was saying: “What the f*** am I going to do with this present? I didn’t want a f***ing (insert present here).” We ignored it. The Christmas dinner was served and he didn’t bother to help himself. He just stared at it as if it was a piece of trash. Afterwards, mum had a surprise present for him (it was a very expensive camera and printer). He opened it, still in an obnoxious mood, and found that there was a component missing. He started screaming at my mum and she started to cry her heart out. She ran upstairs and he ran after her, shouting. I told him to leave, and he did. Other Christmases have been the same: i.e. him putting his fist through our door, saying I dress like a slut etc. How can you deal with a person like this? Do we stop inviting him round? I’m really sick of our Christmases being ruined, and I’d rather stay out of his way altogether.

According to Erving goffman, what key traits define a total institution?
The ‘total institution’ is the barracks; the prison; the asylum… containing the soldier, the prisoner, the ‘lunatic’ [sic]. One authority, one set of rules, no walls separating work, sleep and play. The symbolic interaction of how to act, when to eat, when to sleep, when to work serves to trigger the collective dehumanization via processes of individualization, deculturalization and dis-identification and the ‘curtailment of the self’ (Goffman, 1961: 27-8). Eventually, this leads to the ‘mortification of the self’ which erodes one’s sense of the self within the ‘total institution’. The ‘props’ that provide our sense of self such as fashion and hairstyles are gone, replaced by uniforms (straitjackets) and short back and side haircuts and… in place of a name… one is given a number (Goffman 1961;1963;1969). The old self is chipped away until it ‘can be seen as something outside oneself that can be constructed, lost and rebuilt, all with great speed and with some equanimity’ (Goffman, 1963:151).
All of my emails to Hotmail users go to their junk folder. How can I get them into the inbox?

Why is affirmative action misunderstood?
I read a lot of posts and have talked with many people who seem to be under the impression that affirmative action is a policy that gives minorities unfair advantages in society as far as getting into schools, obtaining scholarships and being hired for employment. However, I seldom hear or read anyone acknowledge that the demographic that benefits from affirmative action the most (by far) are Caucasian women who earn less than men, but are not a minority. Who is responsible for this collective misunderstanding of affirmative action and who would benefit from the ethnic tensions that are caused from the misunderstanding? What would their motive be? My contention is that throughout history, those with money/power are able to control the masses by keeping them at odds with each other and race is a brilliant social construct used to divide people so that the masses don't attack the real minority, which are the aristocracy/ corporate class/ wealthy. Agree/Disagree? ---- why?
