I read Yuri manga quite often. Yuri is actually my second favorite genre of manga, with the first being horror. I’ve been told that it’s weird that, as a girl, I read Yuri as opposed to Yaoi but I just prefer it more. Also, Yuri on Ice!! was a let down for me with that misleading title.
For mature shoujo manga you could go the josei (targeted toward adult women) route like Anindito said (I also recommend Nana). And you can also stay within the shoujo realm and still find some stories with really mature themes.Honestly with shounen, seinen, shoujo and josei manga the lines between all those categories can easily be blurred. Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) is technically a shounen but definitely has a shoujo style of art. The main thing that determines a manga’s category is the target demographic of the magazine it’s published in.Anywho, mature shoujo manga examples:Hot GimmickTechnically still a shoujo, but has some very dark themes (rape, revenge, incest? and abusive relationships). Hot GimmickThe DressWhenever you mix shoujo and horror you get some mature combos as well. The Dress is a good example of this. Very short one shot manga, pretty dark. The Dress MangaTwo Will ComeA mystery/suspense/horror shoujo. The main heroine is locked in a family curse, someone close to her will murder her soon but she has no idea who. This is a underrated gem, highly recommend. Two Will Come, Volumes 1 and 2Anything by Nakamura AsumikoNakamura sensei is a gothic-horror genius. She mainly writes short stories. If super dark yaoi is your thing, she has written plenty of that. If gothic ambiance NOT yaoi is your thing she has that too. Her art style is simple, yet lovingly rich.She has also written a book “Utsubora story of a novelist” that is published in English. I hear it’s quite good (It’s also where the above picture is from) Utsubora - Vertical, Inc.
Yaoi/yuri/shoujo manga recs please?
im looking for something where person a confesses to person b but person b rejects them and then a third party comes in and likes person a and so person b gets jealous. also, i want manga/anime where person a and person b get together at the end! i dont like it when the main character ends up with the second person to be honest. i dont really mind if its a yaoi, yuri, or shoujo as long as its a romance manga. ive already read kamisama hajimemashita, itazura na kiss, peach girl, skip beat, tonari no kaibutsu kun, lovely conplex, inuyasha, special a, bokura ga ita, kyou koi wa hajimemasu, special a, yume musubi koi musubi, star like kiss (or daze i cant rememeber), and a few others (basically most of the ones that people always recommend) so id appreciate it if the manga hasnt already been said before. id also like it if the main conflict has been resolved (i.e. if person a and b are together but the manga isnt over thats fine) or if its beem completed and fully english translated. ongoing ones are fine too if theyre regularly translated and updated im not picky on length either as long as the manga isnt ridiculousy long i hope that wasnt too much to ask and im sorry if it was!
