Year 12 Student Depressed. Help

How many students get depressed in the United States?

Depends on which student population you are referring to:Under 17 over 12 roughly around 12.5%Over 18 roughly around 18.1%Depression is treatable regardless of age. A certified therapist is best at helping someone. There are also self-help resources including free online therapy for depression that could help.

What does it feel to be a depressed student in 5th Grade?

Lonely. Confusing and terrifying. At 10 I was too young to understand why I felt so sad one moment and then terrified and anxious another. It feels like you have lived a full life like say an 80 year old would but you are only 10. Parents are the #1 factor of whether kids will pull through it or not. Partly because of $$$$ required for good care and partly because anything less than 110% support will make it way more likely to lead to a suicide attempt by teenage years. So sad but we have to talk about this.

Is this depression? I'm 12 years old?

antidepressants don't work very well - they appear to work only by placebo effect for mild to moderate depression, and only barely better than placebo in severe depression, recent research shows, and they appear to increase your risk of going on to develop bipolar disorder later, a more severe problem than regular depression. And there are special risks for kids, possibly many unknown problems, since your brain is developing. There are tens of billions of dollars made selling these pills each year in the US alone, it is totally corrupting good medical advice. NO medication is entirely safe, and psychiatric drugs are riskier than most medications, but you'd never realize that from the chirpy commercials pushing abilify etc.

If you don't have any friends, that is the reason you feel bad - people NEED social support. Some people are quite extroverted, and have trouble being alone for long periods of time, so even a person with many friends may have trouble being home alone. If that is you, keep busy, and call up a friend now and then to break up the alone time. If you have a history of sexual abuse or severe emotional abuse, that can certainly cause depression, or if there is a lot of stress going on, such as someone you were very close to died, or your parents are divorcing, you are being bullied, etc etc. Those kinds of things are best dealt with by a professional therapist.

exercise is a terrific antidepressant - try to get a lot more of it. DON'T listen to sad music, it will make things much worse. Distract yourself when you are down - keep busy, read a book, play a game, do a hobby, whatever. get social support regularly. Ask your mom or dad what they do when they are down. If there has been an extended period of overcast weather, that can really put people in a funk. We just got thru 2 weeks of rain here in Minnesota, and people really got moody! Winter can be awful too, with short days.

If you are unable to function normally, such as, for example, you used to be an honors student, and now you are flunking everything, then that is more serious depression, and you should be seen by a therapist ASAP.

all the best

PS yes, puberty does make you moody as anything - it can be very difficult! Good for you that you talked to your mom about this.

I am in 12th and feeling depressed and scared for future after seeing my pre-board round 1 marks which are really less. What to do?

Firstly, it is absolutely normal to be nervous before 'board exams' primarily because of the hype around. However, only within limits. In our society, board exams supposedly hold high importance and that's how the things have been since times immemorial. Most people do not perform well in the pre boards. Its largely because they're aren't thorough with the syllabus months before the actual exams. And it is alright, again.Take your time to finish things at your own pace. Do not rush through anything. However, keep refining the weak points that you identify in the incessant examination cycle. There's still enough time to redeem. Relax! I'm sure it'll be a cakewalk. But most importantly, even if it doesn't turn out well, it's not going to be the end of the world. Ofcourse, the exams are crucial but they are definitely not worth 'depression'. Calm your self. Things will fall into place till the time you are genuine with your efforts. There's a long way to go and you'll yourself realise the imbecile significance of these exams. There are a plethora of opportunities waiting for you out there. All the very best! Not just for the upcoming exams but for all your future endeavors that are meant to leave you spellbound.
