Your Favorite Austria Attractions

Is Austria a good place to travel?

Both Vienna and Salzburg are wonderful places to visit with a lot to see and do. If you go, take the time to get out into the counrtyside for a day - it's beautiful with a lot of spectacular photo ops. While you're in the Salzburg area, Hellbrunn Palace is worth visiting - beautiful grounds and interesting fountains and don't miss Schonbrunn Palace while in Vienna.

Austria is great for photos rather you're interested in photographing scenic beauty, architecture, public art, food, people, ...

Are there any free museums, galleries, gardens, or other attractions in Vienna and Austria more generally?

Unlike some national capital cities such as London or DC, nothing much in the culture, arts, or historical realm are free here in Vienna. However, a few have free days:The Military History Museum (Heeresgeschichtlichesmuseum) is free on the first Sunday of every month (Eintritt & Öffnungszeiten) and is really worth a visit. The City of Vienna Museum (Wien Museum - wienmuseum.at - Wienmuseum.at) operates several different museums that are free for everybody under 19 years of age and are free to all visitors on the first Sunday of each month. The Wien Museum at Karlsplatz is my favorite museum in Vienna because it has a sampling of everything and helps the visitor really understand the interesting cultural and historical background of Vienna. The Art History Museum (Kunsthistorischesmuseum) is free for those under 19. Otherwise, no love.  (Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien)The Natural History Museum (Naturhistorischesmuseum -- Naturhistorisches Museum Wien - Naturhistorisches Museum) has a dusty charm and some really great stuff for curious kids, and is free to those under 19.MUMOK (Modern Art) has no free days, but is only €5.00 on Thursday evenings (18:00-21:00?).  The Leopold Museum has nothing free for you. Sorry. The Technical Museum is free for those under 19. Otherwise: no free days :-(Belvedere is free if you're 18 or younger.Okay, that's all I had time to look up. There are literally dozens of more museums in Vienna (to get you started: Museums in Vienna.  My recommendation is to figure out what interests you then go to the museums website. If you don't speak German, then use Google Chrome to automatically translate the German versions of the website and read the "entrance fees" page. It has been my experience in the past (although very rare) that the free days were only listed in the German version of the website (for example, that used to be the case at the Military History Museum website).Almost every park or garden you encounter will be free of entrance fees. You can even wander the grounds at Schönbrunn and climb to the Gloriette without paying.

Best places in Austria for the listed criteria?

Hello
Does anyone have any suggestions for a place in the alpine regions of Austria based on the following criteria :
spectacular views of surrounding mountains
location such that cycling is easy ( some sort of valley where is relatively flat)
If possible near by lakes and rivers ( hopefully where rowing and rafting might be possible)
hiking trails and preferably forest trails .
adequate selection of local restaurants , with local cuisine and nearby essential shopping facilities
if possible other miscellaneous attractions , such as museums , castles etc .
basically anything else that can keep a person exploring the region whilst enjoying the nature around

What are your favorite places to visit in Vienna?

I may be unlike other tourists. When I'm in a place, I like to read literature or novels with the place I'm in as the setting for the story. So, when in Delphi, I read The Odyssey of Homer. Etc.My favorite place to visit in all of Vienna -- and favorite thing to do there for hours on end -- is to go to many shops in the old part of town and collect ingredients while trying to speak to shopkeepers; then, picnic assembled, to sit on a sunny bank of the Danube Canal in the old part of town with a picnic (must haves: bread, chocolate, oranges and wine), reading. I read lots of Freud, just like that, looking up every once in awhile and marveling at the beauty of the place.

What are most romantic places to visit in Vienna, Austria?

Wien as it is better known is a great place to spend your time. I would certainly help you on this.Try going to schronbunn palace with a 3 circuit ticket and try spending whole time in the palace and have a brisk walk in the little forest at the back. The forest can be accessed again and again for the peace. Also see the horses and gardens.Go to hofburg palace and enjoy the half day in garden…looking around the wholet thing…its very innate.Enjoy the evenings on danube..get a boat or go swimming together.Enjoy the beauty of city on ottakring with vendors, opera house etc.
