Defiant Trump appears to hit back at Meghan Meghan after she took a swipe at the president

President Donald Trump appeared to hit back at Meghan McCain after she made fiery comments about him at her father's funeral.

Trump, who  was not invited to the service, was quick to blast out his controversial slogan after McCain declared that 'America was always great' in her emotional eulogy.

'MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!' he Tweeted early on Saturday evening after playing a round of golf in Virginia. He then retweeted it a couple of hours later.

Senator John McCain's daughter was the first to speak at the Saturday funeral after his casket was carried into the Washington National Cathedral by 15 pallbearers.

During the speech she said:  'The America of John McCain is the America of the revolution.

'The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great.'

The daytime television panelist struggled to hold back tears as she mourned her father in a moving eulogy.

'I am here before you today saying the words I have never wanted to say, feeling the loss i have never wanted to feel,' she said. 'My father is gone.'

'My father was a great man, a great warrior, a great American. I admire him for all of these things, but I love him because he was a great father.'

While she spoke of how her father taught her to be brave and resilient, she soon turned to politics, and delivered a series of not-so-subtle jibes towards President Trump - who avoided being drafted into military service as a young man.

'We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness,' she said.

'The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served.

The previous day, Meghan threw major side eye when Vice President Mike Pence mentioned Trump during his own eulogy for Senator McCain.

During the speech, Pence said: 'The president asked me to be here on behalf of a grateful nation, to pay a debt of honor and respect to a man who served his country throughout his life, in uniform and in public office.

'Today as a reflection of the esteem in which his colleagues and our country hold him, Senator John McCain joins those ranks.'

Meghan's facial expression attracted attention from several social media users.

'The side eye Meghan McCain is giving Mike Pence...,' one Twitter user said. Another added: 'I feel like Meghan McCain is trying to set Pence on fire with her mind.'
