Are Pitbulls Good With The Elderly

Are pitbulls good with the elderly?

I could not, in good conscience, recommend a pit to a senior. Certainly not a puppy, and could not recommend that pup to anyone if it comes from a breeder who is willing to sell a pup at 6 weeks of age. No decent breeder (of any breed) sends pups to new homes before the age of 8 weeks.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the breed, but temperament is genetic ... good genes make good dogs. Most pits LOVE people ... kids, seniors, ALL people ... but dog-aggression is a bred-FOR trait. For that reason alone, pit bulls are unwelcome in many places. Many trainers will not accept them in group training, some boarding facilities refuse them because of the liability, many apartments will not allow them, even some towns and cities have banned the breed. Which I don't agree with (!), but the pit's unfortunate reputation makes it difficult to find acceptance.

Many other things to consider:

*It's a high-energy dog. Quite rambunctious. If the owner can't keep up with the exercise requirement for as long as this dog lives, it will be destructive.

*What's your living situation? If there is ANY possibility that you will need to leave your home and move into assisted-living or even a senior facility within the next 12 to 14 years or more, this pup is not for you.

*How's your health? How healthy will you be 12 or 14 years or more from now? What happens if your health prevents you from caring for this animal in the future? Pits often end up in shelters because they proved to be just TOO MUCH DOG for the owner. A shelter is likely a death-sentence for this breed?

*How are you set financially? Are you POSITIVE that you can afford a dog, and all its related expenses (vet care ain't cheap!) for as long as this dog lives?

Sorry. Please rethink this puppy.

What do full blooded pitbulls eat?

“Full-blooded pit bull”s eat human beings exclusively. Haven’t you watched the news? A “full-blooded pit bull” will preferentially eat children. “Full-blooded pit bulls” will eat other humans in the absence of human children. Their preferences in terms of human meat are as follows:Children - Younger children are best. The Elderly - Elderly Women are preferred over elderly men.Teenagers - Teenage females are also preferred over teenage malesAdults - the same preferences as above apply with respect to biological sex.Pit bulls, as one typically finds them, mostly consume this interesting invention; the invention is cryptically named, so I’m not surprised you missed it: Dog Food. Interestingly, this secret and highly mysteriously product happens to be available for in your local grocery store. You have to be on the lookout though, the cryptically named and mysterious “Dog food” (What the hell is that supposed to mean anyway) is typically hidden in it’s own aisle at the grocery store.

How do I get a Pit Bull (10 years old) and a 3-month-old pup (an Aussie) to stop picking on a 16-year-old Chihuahua? They are my grand-dogs and I have them for July.

It is highly likely that you have a case of curious puppy ( completely normal behavior) and cranky Chihuahua. Chihuahuas are extremely defensive little dogs and for a dog, a good defense is a good offense. Chihuahua snaps at puppy and the elderly Pitbull who rules the house gets upset.Look at things from your dogs’ pov here. This is their home, you are their person. They are expected to be nice to this invader who wants to fight over being sniffed. Chihuahuas can push the buttons of other dogs because they are so outwardly aggressive. It takes an awfully calm dog not to react to them. Chihuahuas are understandably nervous Nellies because they are the smallest breed in the world. They have the world's worst case of Napoleon Complex. The best thing to do is keep them separate, you should defer to your dogs rather than the newcomer. He invaded their home so their routine should not suffer for it. A 16 year old dog spends much of its time sleeping anyway so putting him in another room shouldn't be a problem as long as the room isn't cold. Chihuahuas do better in warmer climates, even getting their feet wet after it rains can cause hypothermia. They absolutely need to be fed away from your dogs.

Why are pitbulls so aggressive?

A well bred, temperamentally stable APBT would not kill a human. The APBTs that *are* human aggressive should be destroyed. Period. They are a dog aggressive breed, it's a common trait.. so that shouldn't surprise you.

There are hardly any real APBTs left.. and it's sad that when people think "pit bull" they usually picture those overbred, hippo things.. which aren't American Pit Bull Terriers.

And to the ones saying "its all how they're raised"... get a grip, people. That's not always the case.

HermitCrabber Petlover!....you are living in a fantasy land!!! APBTs DO NOT BELONG IN DOG PARKS.

Are pit bulls naturally aggressive?

I've worked with dozens of APBTs and other "bully breeds" and have not encountered human aggression with a single one. I have encountered a few cases of canine aggression, but it was due to improper socialization, poor handling, and abuse (I foster/rehabilitate bully breed type dogs from these unfortunate situations).

Like any terrier, bullies can develop animal aggression, but there is no correlation whatsoever with human aggression. I believe nurture ultimately overrides nature.

My APBT mix is an absolute mush that just got his butt kicked by a 4 month old Pug earlier tonight on his walk (meaning he went on his back and enjoyed having the puppy crawl all over him). He's wonderful with kids, adults, and the elderly. That being said, I do extensively train my dogs and will not allow for any improper behavior because this type of breed unfortunately has a negative stereotype that surrounds them. He was found as an emaciated, abused stray left to die in the Bronx last winter. He is now in training to become a therapy dog.

And in response to GIRLXXX: I am not a tough guy nor am I in denial of the breed type's supposed "nature". I am a 21 yr old female college graduate with a dual degree in Political Science and History. I wrote my senior thesis on the APBT. Blanket statements are for the ignorant and simple minded.

The APBT scores higher on temperament tests than the Collie, the Beagle, and many other "family dogs" that don't get slandered the same way they do. See this link http://atts.org/stats1.html

Bottom line: What makes a good dog? A responsible owner. A dangerous dog? A bad owner.

Edit: Thanks, TD fairy. Nice to know an educated, responsible dog owner is so unsavory. Either refute my evidence or else look like an uninformed, biased @ss. Last time I checked, the judicial system worked on an "innocent until proved guilty" basis, not the other way around.

Can a man kill a pitbull with his bare hands?

Sure. I’ve seen it happen. A pit bull, not one of mine, charged and attacked a young child… probably about 10 years old. The parents were freaking out, but one level headed individual, who was quite muscular, grabbed the dog by the neck, brought it to a nearby fountain, and drowned it on the spot.

How strong are Pit Bulls compared to other dogs?

I agree that Pit bulls have strength and muscle. I disagree though with the comments that Pit bulls are bad around children and that once they attack’s firearm must be used. Those are very uneducated comments.I’ve owned Pit bulls for 18 years. I’ve studied the breed and have owned and fostered 15 Pit bulls in those years. I’m an average size young lady and never once did any of my dogs pull me down, attack me or act aggressive towards me. I’ve socialized my dogs with children, elderly adults and never were they forceful. Yes, they’re strong animals—but they have hearts of gold. They snuggle, make me laugh daily, love beyond most humans and are so eager to please.
