Bad Motorcycle Starter Solenoid

What happens if the starter solenoid is bad?

Solenoids do go bad on occasion, although their construction has improved and it doesn’t happen nearly as often as it used to.A solenoid is a simple device that uses a small current to control a large one. When you turn the key in your car to start the engine, it connects the control half of the solenoid to the battery, causing a small current to pass through windings that generate a magnetic field. The magnetic field draws a metal slug down, overcoming the force of a spring that pushes the slug away and closing an electrical contact in the power side of the solenoid. Closing that contact connects the starter to the battery, causing a large current to flow through the contact to the starter motor, causing it to engage on the engine and turn it.When the solenoid goes bad, something happens so there is inadequate or no current to the starter when you turn the key. Internal corrosion may freeze the slug in its “away” position. The power contacts may burn or corrode, adding enough resistance to the circuit so that the starter doesn’t engage properly, or doesn’t turn the engine over. And that’s what happens when a solenoid goes bad — the engine won’t turn over.

Is it bad to start a motorcycle by bridging the starter solenoid?

My starter button isn't working (1980 Honda CM400) and I need to get to class for the week. I can't take it to the shop now so I've been starting it with a screwdriver across the solenoid. How bad is this for the bike? I know it drains the battery and the solenoid gets a little eaten up but anything more damaging/serious?

Motorcycle starter spins but doesn't catch engine?

I purchased a 1982 Suzuki GS300. It was running good the first day and the next day...it wouldn't start. The starter grinds but there is no engine noise whatsoever. What could have happened?

2004 Honda Shadow VT600 Motorcycle Won't Start?

Just bought it last week & rode it home about 12 miles in flooding rain. I took the battery out and took it to have tested & it is good. put it back in the bike and it started yesterday. Didn't go for a ride after. Went to start it today it started then died when I took off the choke and wouldn't restart just a buzzing sound. Not turning over. Lights, & horn work fine. Starter or ? Any suggestions on where to start I just spent all my saving on it...it has 14k on it and looks to be in very good condition otherwise.

so hat is the deal, bad relay or voltage reg. or??????????

Why does my motorcycle make clicking noises instead of turn over, when trying to start?

The clicking noise indicates the starter solenoid isn't getting enough electrical power to engage the starter. This would indicate a low, or partially charged battery. A fully charged battery in a "12 Volt" system should actually read 14.2 volts. A weak battery can still light up your bike's headlight, but doesn't have enough voltage to engage your starter.

The first thing you should do is invest in a battery MAINTAINER, which is a small battery charger specially made for motorcycles, ATVs and similar small electrical systems. It won't burn out your battery from overcharging, but will keep it at full capacity over time. A battery MAINTAINER is fairly inexpensive, and can be found at most motorcycle shops for less than $30. If you get in the habit of plugging your bike in when you're done riding, it'll be good to go the next time you want to ride.

Good luck, and ride safe!

Starter Solenoid Problems? 1984 Honda Magna VF700C?

sounds like your battery is dead. Inspect it. If a lead / acid type, make sure it's full, add distilled water to each cell to bring to full line. on it or any other, charge it. you may have to buy a new one. Do yourself a favor, if you blew the metal fuse strip, get the proper one. It blew for a reason. If you let the smoke out of the wiring, it won't ever work again without a new harness

Is common for a starter to pass a bench test, but, still be bad?

A pal's car has had an ignition issue for almost a year. Rendering it immobile. I think it's the starter as every other avenue has been gone down. But, he claims that he'd it tested at a local shop and saw it turn over when the juice got turned on and that it's good for that reason. Could it be the solenoid working intermittently, perhaps?
