Whats the best hand-held console for visual novels?
I have to say a PSP or PSVita wouldn't quite satisfy your requirements properly. Including custom firmware only visual novels there's very few good ones. So the only decent one's currently that I can think of are Clannad, Saya no Uta, Narcissu and Dangan Ronpa. I bought an 11" windows tablet pc for the purpose of reading visual novels with increased portability. I currently use it as I desktop in conjunction with a monitor, an external hdd, a keyboard and mouse. I very rarely use it as a tablet, although it's nice to be able to write signatures with the active digitizer pen and to have the option of using it as a tablet. The alternative option you could use, which I use for when I want to read visual novels on the train is spashtop streamer or another vnc alternative. With splashtop I stream from computer at home to my android phone or ipad when I have it with me. There are speed and other issues that arise but it has sound and you can set the streamer so the monitor on your computer shows a black screen with the splashtop and mute the sound while you see, hear and control from your device over the internet(local or cellular). it does not have a microphone. it just can have up to 2^20 entries (1,048,576) for each subcategory (animal, vegetable, mineral, etc) which pretty much encompasses 99.9% of objects that one could think of to ask it. through 20 questions yes or no, it can potentially reach each of those million plus answers. the only way to beat it is to think of more obscure things that they hopefully didnt program into it. best of luck!
