Do Indonesians have surnames?
Hi, Kurojin2 Most of us Indonesians don't have any surname. There are some Indonesian ethnic groups, however, maintain their surnames. Among these tribes are the Bataks, Minahasas (Manadonese), Ambonese, and some (if not all) Papuan tribes. The Nias people of the Nias Island in the province of North Sumatra have a peculiar custom of hiding their surnames, for example, Indonesian Powerlifter World Champion of 1980's named Nanda hid his surname, that is Telaumbanua. Chinese Indonesians usually got 2 names; their Chinese name and their Indonesian name. Taipan Liem Sioe Liong (Sudono Salim) chose an indonesian name that resembles his Chinese one (As you might already know, Chinese surnames are written as first names, in this case, Liem), while some of them chose a very different name than their original name (sociologist Arief Budiman, for instance), and still some others prefer not to change their Chinese names, like ex-secretary of economy Kwik Kian Gie or All-England Badminton Champion of 1970's-1980's Liem Swie King. Having 2 names is not limited to Chinese Indonesians only, since Taiwanese or Hong Kong Chinese also got their "international" (English) names. Some families of ethnic groups who do not have family names now have started to use ones. Some adopt Arabian way of naming who put father's name as last name, for instance, ex-President Abdurrahman Wahid (a Javanese), whose father's and grandfather's names are Wahid Hasyim and Hasyim Asy'ari, respectively. But most of Indonesians still don't have surnames (this doesn't mean we don't know our genealogy). In our opinion, a personal name must have an integral meaning; all words in the name are arranged into a meaningful phrase, and a surname presence would waste this idea, or, at least, would make the name sounds strange. Hi, Going anonymous for obvious reasons. You can apply for the marriage certificate by getting an online form from the website. Fill it up properly as if you are doing actually. Get sign of two witness or do it yourself. Put a seal in it copying it from online images of registrar seal convert it into PDF and print it. Wherever you want to show that you just show this. And try to convince them on the point that you have applied for the certificate and waiting for the same since our court procedure is long. It works in most of the cases. I have tried that :p
