The most famous and common colloquial Arabic is the Egyptian Arabic because it’s widely spread and it’s used in the media, movies, TV shows, songs…etc. Everybody understands it. Can someone teach me the polite way to greet someone in Arabic?

That is the most common greeting in Arabic, but to be quite frank as-salam 'alaykum has some religious connotation. Usually, it is no big deal and even many non-Muslims will use it. But, in some cases, hardliners don't like to give this greeting to people they know are non-Muslims or they will only grudgingly give the response: wa-'alykum as-salam. I don't usually initiated greeting but will give the response if it is said to me. I prefer saying good morning/afternoon-evening depending on time of day. Sabah al-khayr or masa' al-khayr. The response is: Sabah an-noor or masa an-noor. You can also say ahlan or ahlan wa sahlan if you are greeting someone in your location. If you go to their house they will probably say it to you, for sure. It basically means a familial welcome or take a load off - there isn't a direct translation. There is also the general term marhaban which is like hello. The response will be the same or sometimes a play on words, marhabtayn, which is like saying "two marhabans," or like 'back at ya!' Sorry I'm not giving you a clear answer but it really depends on the situation. Arabs really love the formality of greetings and interacting socially so it is not so cut and dry.
