Do Colleges Care About Freshman Grades Really Matter

Do my freshman year grades matter for college?

My freshman year of high school I really didn't care about my education, bad choices, blah blah blah...My best grade was a C, 3 Fs, 4 Ds whatever. My Sophmore year I did a whole lot better mostly As, 2 Bs, & 1 C. Junior year was the same straight & an occasional B. My 10th-11th grade GPA is about a 3.5, but with my freshman year grade included its barely a 2.5. My question is will my freshman year mess up my chances of getting into San Diego State University?

First semester freshman year college grades?

I was in a similar boat as you. In High School, I graduated with a 3.1 GPA... nothing to brag about, but school was always very easy for me. I didn't have to work hard, and got pretty decent grades. Everyone always commented on how intellegent I was, and I took it to hart. At one point, I was professionally tested as having a 147 IQ, which classifed me as a "genius". College was a huge slap in the face.

My first semester I got a 1.7GP.... my second semester a 0.0, failed all 5 courses. The good thing is, as long as you learn from your mistakes (which it sounds like you did) you will have the opportunity to make up for it. Retake those two classes and really apply yourself, you will bring those grades up and wipe the bad ones out... they won't show up in your GPA anymore.

I took that 0.0 semester as a learning experience... I ended up graduating college *** laude. I ended up with a 3.45 GPA, and was on the Dean's List of academic excellence every full semester after my bad one.

Keep your head in the game and look forward.... don't worry about looking back.

Do UC colleges look at your quarter grades of freshman year? Does it matter a lot to them?

If the quarter grades are recorded on your official, final high school transcript, then you have to report those grades on your UC application.

UCs calculate your GPA using the grades that you received in a-g courses from the summer after your freshman year to the summer after your junior year. UCs do look at courses you take in freshman and senior years; the grades and rigor of your coursework are considered in context of your overall curriculum. But freshman and senior year grades are NOT included in the GPA calculation.

Does sophomore year really matter to colleges?

I am not taking any honors or AP classes in my sophomore year but i will be taking 2 or 3 my junior year and 2 or 3 more my senior year. Do colleges even care about senior year?

Does my freshman year of high school really matter?

YES it does count just as much as sophomore year. Junior year counts the most. And why are you worried, A's and B's are awesome. Colleges don't expect straight A's unless you want to go to one of the ivy league schools. I'm not sure what scholarship that is...so I can't comment on how good your grades are for that. As long as you keep all A's and B's and join some clubs you'll be perfectly fine. Colleges care the most about GRADES from freshman thru junior year, and 1st quarter senior grades and SAT scores.

I'll tell you about me. I get all A's and B's too. I don't do any sports. I have only been in 5 clubs my entire 4 years in high school. Did pretty good on SAT's. I got into every college i applied to, and some were pretty competitive (not ivy league though).

You'll be fine. Stop worrying and enjoy high school while you're still there! It goes by REALLY fast.
And yes, high school does get better socially because more people mature and you get to know more people. Work wise, the work only gets harder, especially Junior year. That's the hardest!
