Mustanger is right, the lead would protect the valves. That being said has anybody ever SEEN a valve seat pulverized due to lack of lead... Niether have I and I've owned a 76 gremlin with a 71 V8 in it, a 72 dart, an 84 dodge van with a 71 slant six, and I currently own a 51 buick, and like I said nothing ever happened to me. I think if my valves ever crap out I will have those hardened seats put in at my local machine shop. Untill then you may as well tell me I need elephant urine in my gas, but I'm not paying extra for it.

It was 1973 and you can add gas additive and run regular or mid grade for best Performance Lucas makes an injector additive that will help with the valves and since it has run lead in it before the chances are it won't bother the seats anyway as it already has the lead pounded into the valve and seats already. Your biggest problem is going to be alcohol it will eat the old valve guide seals so again the lucas additive with help with that you will also have problems with the crank case ventilator valve and the carburetor float. if you get a chance to replace it do so, if it has a Metal one your ok, but the foam floats that came with them will burn the engine down when the alcohol eats the neoprene off the float, and add a fuel pump too as it to will give up the Ghost because of the alcohol and the fuel filter as well. buy new pump and filter that won't disagree with alcohol since our good government decided to make it mandatory to burn in all fuels now.

The pressure would keep building until something blows, but luckily there is a pressure cap which releases extra pressure. The coolant flows out of the cap into an expansion tank. There cap has a spring which opens at 12 to 15 lbs of pressure. When the system starts to cool, a vacuum is created within the radiator: this again allows coolant to flow but in the opposite direction. The expansion tank has a hose which allows coolant to flow back into the radiator. For the system to work correctly, you need enough coolant in the overflow and a working cap, otherwise you'll draw air into the system. Air doesn't dissipate heat well.On some cars, Ford, and BMW for example, the overflow is pressurized and a part of the radiator. I assumed that this is to increase the cooling efficiency of the system without having to increase the radiator size or airflow front the front of the car.A little tidbit: older engines did not have to pressured system. The radiator was under filled to allow expansion. This worked well when cars didn't have to meet emissions and could use fuel and oil for cooling. Also, an old school cast iron engine can be overheated and still be usable after changing a headgasket.
