Do You Prefer Single Coil Pickups Or Humbuckers

Would a single coil or Humbucker pickup be better for pop-punk?

My son is a musician and he sent this answer:Humbucker is the thickest sound.  Single coil has a clearer effect.  For pop punk, often the guitar assumes a role of being chunky so you might prefer humbucker in that context.  An example of great single coil tone would be Jimi Hendrix, and double coil would be Jimmy Page of Led Zep.     The hum never ends up being a big deal.  I choose my pickup completely depending on what kind of guitar sound I want.  (I have both kinds) Funky or jangly guitar is single coil, heavy guitar is usually double coil.  My main guitar has guyatone style mini humbuckers in it made by Curtis Novak, and I find it to be the best of both worlds.... The bite of single coil and the power of double.  Also, B. B. King used a humbucker.

Fender Strat with Humbucker vs Single coil.?

Hello there,

A Strat with 3 single coils will give you a humbucking effect in position 2 and 4 on the pickkup selector switch. As Walter already explained, a humbucking pickup is 2 single coils, one of which is reverse wound with respect to the other. That is what cancels out the hum. The middle pickup of a Strat is reverse wound with respect to either the neck or birdge pickup. In positions 2 and 4 of the selector switch, you get the mid pick with either the neck or bridge pickup. Therefore you are playing a humbucker in either of those positions.

The voicing of the humbucking pickup Fender uses in it Standard Strat HSS is different from the single coils. It therefore has a different tone from a Strat with 3 singles and the pickup switch set to 2 or 4. The only way to decide which you prefer best is to go play both.

Humbucker Sound vs. Single Coil Sound?

A bit of both. Some guitars have HSS or like my tele, which has humbucker, single, and lipstick. It really depends what you are gonna be playing. Lighter stuff go Single, like strats, and heavier go humbuckers, like an SG or a Les Paul. From my experience single coils can play heavier stuff and sound decent, but humbuckers have problems playing lighter stuff like blues/rock. Humbuckers do sound better when extremely distorted, though.

Fender Stratocaster with humbucker pickups?

I actually own one of these models. I REALLY love it! I think it sounds amazing. It also has something that I think is called the s1 switching system. It's a button on the volume knob that you push in and it makes the guitar sound warmer. I have never seen anyone with a strat like this. I got it for my birthday because I knew I wanted a strat. The guy in the store kept pushing this guitar on me. He told me that he really felt like it was the best deal in the store. I loved the way it played and I loved the color so I bought it. Is anyone more familiar with this model? Do you own one? Do you like it more than a regular single coil strat? I've never really played an American strat with single coils. Any thoughts on this guitar? I'd love some feedback on it. As I said earlier, I love the damn thing. Just want to hear opinions on it. Thanks.

Looking for bassy sounding single coil-sized humbuckers?

Im building a guitar and though i like the looks of telecasters, i dont like the twangy tone... I like the deeper sounding rock tone. Any recommendations on single-coil-sized humbuckers that will get me that really bassy tone?

Could I attach a temporary single coil pickup to my Les Paul instead of wiring it permanently?

If you have the tech skills, I’m sure you can, but why would you want to?A pickup needs to be pretty firmly affixed to the guitar, as well as wired into the circuitry (if you want the output to go through the same output jack), so it’s not clear to me how much cosmetic surgery you might need to perform on the guitar to even have a usable result.Another option would be to put in humbuckers with a coil tap and switches so that you don’t have to hack up the guitar.
