Does It Matter What Degree I Get To Become A Police Officer

Degrees best for becoming a Police Officer?

None of those college majors would give you any better chance of becoming a police officer than the other. All of them would be good choices. There are many majors that are good for police officers. Choose a major that interests you and that would be useful for police work. Accounting, law, communications, a foreign language, photography, and computer science are some other examples of majors that can be good for police officers. Get at least a 4 year degree with the highest grade point average that you can. Become the best writer that you can. Improve your vocabulary, spelling, and reading comprehension skills. Improve your observation and memory skills. Don't do anything illegal. Maintain a good reputation. Become as physically fit as you can. These are some things you can do that could help you become a police officer. Best of luck!

Can I become a police officer with a history degree?

Yes you can.

Police officers MUST have a college degree. The minimum is a two year degree in criminal justice.

A four year degree is preferred. I have a BA in English and Sociology. After college I decided to become a police officer. I had to go back to school for a year to get seven more classes as part of a "Law Enforcement Certificate Program".

Since you are still in school, just make sure you take the correct classes as electives...such as First Responder, Legal Issues, Traffic and Criminal codes, etc.

Can i still become a police officer with my bad grades in high school?

Yes you CAN still become a PO if you want. Your grades overall do NOT effect your chances. If you have a high school diploma this IS required. BUT The city or town only see a diploma. They do NOT see grades. If you have Higher education like college degree in law this will help you. Military background will also help. You staying OUT of trouble will help. And since you are a freshman you still have time to bring your grades up. And as proof I'll say this. I DROPPED OUT of high school at 17. Joined the Marines and got a GED. I was nuttin but a TROUBLE maker in high school. I DID get hired by a local PD and have since RETIRED.
BTW JIMBO has NO clue as to what he/she is talkin bout.

Does it matter what degree you have to be an officer in the military?

To get accepted into a commissioning program, your degree probably wouldn't matter much as long as you met the minimum requirements for that particular service. Forinstance, even though you are a History major, the Navy would require at least 2 semesters of physics while the Marines would not (that is based on my old experience, so be sure to check with each service first).

Where it might make a difference is in selection for your actual warfare specialty. For instance, in the Navy you can go be a Surface Warfare Officer (drive ships), a Submarine Warfare Officer, or an Aviation Warfare Officer (plus some other non-warfare specialties). Then, they may apply a grade-point modifier to your GPA to "normalize" how you would rank amongst other officer candidates finishing at the same time you are. Engineering majors get the highest modifiers, followed by Business, and then your Liberal Arts type majors (including History).

For instance, a 3.5 GPA engineering major would have a higher rating than a 3.5 GPA history major. However, a 3.7 GPA history major would probably beat out a 3.0 GPA engineering student.

My advice is this: do what you love and do your best at it. You'll probably get a better GPA in a subject you enjoy than in a dry subject that holds no interest for you. It'll all come out in the wash in the end.

Oh, and be sure to enjoy college life, because life in the military doesn't leave a whole lot of free time for vacations, especially if you are in flight training!

Take it from a Navy pilot with 10+ years in!

Do marines have better chances to become police officers?

Having military experience can improve your chances of becoming a police officer. It doesn't matter what branch you choose. Veterans get extra points on civil service tests. Also, some people simply prefer to hire veterans when they can. Having a college degree can also improve your chances of becoming a police officer. A good idea might be to join the Marines and get a college degree. Best of luck!
