Emergency Can You Bike From University Ave

Can emergency vehicles legally run red traffic lights?

Can emergency vehicles legally run red traffic lights?Yes!An emergency vehicle’s siren and/or lights are an indication of the driver’s overriding claim on the right of way. The emergency vehicle’s lights and siren take precedence over all other traffic controls around them, for their vehicle and others. Other drivers must cede the right of way, and in most places are obligated to clear the road, pulling to the side of the road, and usually are required to actually stop until the emergency vehicle has passed. When an emergency vehicle is showing its flashing lights and using its siren and/or horn:● If you have a green signal and a fire truck wants to cross your path, the fire truck has the right of way and you must stop and clear the way.● If you are stopped at a red light and an ambulance needs to pass through from behind you, you need to carefully advance through the intersection to clear the way.● When an emergency vehicle passes you on an avenue or highway, your right of way is removed, and you must not follow that vehicle and pass other vehicles that have cleared the way. (Custom may allow an accompanying vehicle to follow an ambulance to a hospital; Local law and great caution will apply.)

What are some useful tips for students starting their first semester at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock?

It’s a good school. You'll probably be living on campus the first year. If you do, I highly suggest you be social. I was not, I had anxiety, living in the dorms was torture. If you have anxiety get help before you move in, otherwise you will struggle. My roommate sucked and didn't help clean. Get a good broom and mop and even some disinfecting wipes. You'll be inspected from time to time, keep things clean. Clean the microwave in the kitchen if you notice it gets bad or after you use it a few times. I never used it except to heat up water and the other people on my flood made a mess so it got taken away. Do not be afraid to be buddy buddy with the RA, he or she will be your friend and try to help. If there is drama, you need them on your side.Get up early to get ready. If you live off campus, little rock traffic can get bad. You need time to get to class. If you are on campus, still get up a little earlier than you think you need, you'll be sharing the bathroom with at least one other person and you noth need time to get ready. Be involved in things. I wasn't and I regret it. There are clubs, church groups, even thins specific to your major. There is a gym and they have events on campus often. Enjoy it. Also, the fountain is a nice spot to chill, esspecially when the dogwoods are in bloom.I suggest you get a meal plan, but be careful what you eat. They have healthy options but the pizza is really good. Get a bike or scooter if you have classes far apart, it can help so you don't feel the need to run. I suggest you space classes out just a bit, less stressful. Watch the time though. There is help if you struggle in a class. Tutoring, there is the writing center, go to the library or meet with you professor in their office. Don't be afraid to get help.Utilize things. There is a little doctors office on campus if you have health issues. There is a gym. There is a library and computer lab. There is stuff to help you in many ways. You're spending the money, take advantage of it all.Be safe as well. There have been muggings in parking lots and right outside campus. Get some pepper spray, weather you are male or female. Probably the only weapon you can have I think. When it gets dark, be very aware of things. There are police around and emergency buttons, even a phone number and phone app that can help you get in touch with the police on campus. They do a good job.

Can I get a ticket for breaking the law on a bicycle?

Yes. In most jurisdictions, a bicycle is a vehicle, and you are subject to highway statutes while operating it. Which means if you break the law, you get a ticket.Depending on the jurisdiction, there may be some laws which only apply to "motor" vehicles, although bicyclists normally can't count on traffic police (who are almost exclusively not cyclists) to be familiar with those differences. There may also be laws which only apply to bicycles. In every case, if you operate a vehicle on the road, it's your responsibility to know the laws that apply in that area.

How safe is the Berkeley campus at night?

While the campus is safe overall, there are some areas where you should probably look over you shoulder after hours. I had a roommate who was a CSO and spent his nights walking students home. He told me about all of the bad spots in town. Haste-Channing (the area on the south side of campus between those two streets) was where UCPD got a lot of crime reports at night. All of the south side parking structures are trouble spots, since that's where it's easiest to prey upon any unsuspecting person late at night. But in general, if you're on the south side of campus at night, even around the dorms, you should stay alert. I'd also recommend staying away from People's Park after dark.Whenever in doubt, call a CSO to walk you to wherever you need to go. And if pride prevents you from doing that, staying on the well-lit paths should keep you safe. The campus never really sleeps, so there are always people roaming around at all hours -- some are safe people to be around, but others, not so much. Keep your guard up and you'll be fine.

I am planning on cycling 10 km each way for my daily commute. The commute is mainly stretches of bicycle lanes with probably a few traffic stops in between. How long would I take to cycle 10 km assuming I am moderately fit?

I am 51, with arthritis and widespread neuropathy, and very out of shape because the snow has me trapped in my apartment a lot of the time this horrible winter (lol).I can still do 10 km on my single speed at the drop of a hat in 30 minutes, and that’s taking it easy. That’s 20 km/hr or only 12 mph. I used to run that fast in 5 k running races.I do have a vast store of muscle memory and habit that underwrites this. I am more comfortable on a bike than anything else (my broken body has melded into bike riding shape). You just need to give yourself extra time at first until you get a sense of how timing varies from day to day. Do a test ride. This is an ideal distance. Even in bad weather, it’s over before you know it, and I’d bet can be faster door to door than a car (unless you have executive parking ; ).Proper well secured fenders are key. I hate a bike that makes unnecessary noise (I want to hear that Chris King freehub purr, and scare people, but be silent under power ; ).My “pickup truck”:
