In California, what private universities are considered good?

There are a number of private universities in California that are very well-known and have high academic standards. Stanford and USC are the largest and most well known, but there are many more. You could also look into USD, Pepperdine, Loyola Marramount, University of Redlands, and Cal Baptist College. For the most part the majority of the private universities you're going to find in California are tied to a specific religion, but those religions don't dictate the curriculum as much as you would expect. For the most part they're almost identical to other major universities.

What screams "I am new to Silicon Valley?"

Using the term “Silicon Valley". Most people use “Bay Area”. The Valley is a specific part of the Area.Using the term “San Fran”. Either use the full name or “SF” or “The City”.Thinking that you can “beat traffic". People from the Midwest often assume that they can make up lost time by speeding on the freeway or some other shortcut, but it doesn’t work very well. If the Google maps says the drive is going to take an hour, you’re not going to cut it down to 45 minutes. Not understanding basic Venture Capital terms. My best friend is a Tae Kwon Do instructor and after a few years, even he knew the basics about funding rounds, seeds, angels, options, etc.Sticker Shock on rent. People often go from “I’ll rent a place” to “I’ll take a roomate” to “I need to share a house with five people”.“Dressing up” in cheap clothes every day. Outside of the financial district, the pressure to dress fancy is basically non-existent. Most of the millionaires I know dress in jeans/t-shirt or basic slack/collared on a daily basis. You don’t need to wear suits or ties here, there’s no “fake it till you make it” or “dress for the job you want” mentality here.Food specificity. I have guests come who ask for “Asian food” and we all laugh. Indian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Burmese or Thai? They’ll jump on Chinese because it seems easy, only to get the follow-up of “what type of Chinese?”… yeah, we have types… there’s so much of everything here.

How many graduate schools are there in SF Bay Area, compared to other major cities, especially Boston?

There are 8 major graduate schools in the SF Bay Area from the Golden Gate South to Santa Clara Valley. I have included them here. There are countless other colleges in the area but I didn’t put them on this list.If you look at the map of Boston, you will see a tighter grouping of major colleges and universities. It is not really like the SF Bay Area. The SF Bay area is much larger, and the University Campuses are not very close to each other. For example, Stanford is about 50 miles from UC Berkeley. UC San Francisco is about 70 miles from Santa Clara University and San Jose State. It is much more spread out. The map is not really complete for the Bay Area as Santa Clara University, and UC San Francisco, and UC Santa Cruz aren’t in them, but it was the best representation I could find.I would say that the University’s in the SF Bay Area are more like Los Angeles Basin (map at bottom).Stanford University - Graduate Schools - Programs | Graduate AdmissionsUniversity of California, Berkeley - Graduate Programs & Deadlines to ApplySan Jose State - Graduate Admissions and Program EvaluationsUC San Francisco - Graduate Division ProgramsSan Francisco State - Welcome to Graduate Studies at SF StateUniversity of San Francisco - Graduate ProgramsUniverity of California, Santa Cruz - ProgramsCalifornia State University, East Bay - Graduate ProgramsSF Bay Area aboveBoston Area Universities aboveLos Angeles Basin Universities Above

Besides the high cost of real estate, what are the negatives of living in Silicon Valley?

Here are some negatives:Traffic along CA 237, CA 880, and US 101 is terrible around 7am to 10 am and 4:30 PM to 6:45 PMGood luck finding parking in Palo Alto during lunch time.Other cost of living is high.California has some of the highest sales and income tax in the USIf you are firearms owner, California and Santa Clara County makes it difficult for you to own firearms.VTA (Valley Transit Authority) buses never run on time.If you travel to San Francisco, make sure you don't blab that you are working in the tech sector (especially if you are in the Mission or Tenderloin), and in some cases be ready to be met with hostilityYou will always be poorer than everyone else. If you care about that sort of stuff. If you vote Republican, you may have to hide the fact.Silicon Valley is rather hostile to conservatives.Oakland and Burkley have the mother lode of counterculture. If you are tech analyst you might not mix well with the locals. Your mileage may vary. Respect local sentiments and move on. Mostly they are harmless.Hipsters - they are mostly harmless, but they have aura of cool superiority that I find distasteful. Your mileage may vary.Expensive coffee, but I just go to McDonalds for coffee, so it's no big deal.Did I mention the traffic???Other than that, it's pretty good here. Weather is fantastic. Outdoors activities are great. Pay is not too bad. People are friendly, driven (for the most part) and forward looking.
