I want to convert to Islam but I don't speak Arabic. Can I pray in English?

Not at all :) I converted about 2 years ago, and I only know a handful of phrases in Arabic... when I pray or make du'a, I do so in English. I'm pretty sure God speaks all languages ;)

If you ever, ever, ever have any questions about your conversion (or religion in general) - you can email me.

How long will it take to learn Turkish?

Well I am going to Turkey in about 3 and a half years during summer after I turn 16. I want to be fluent in this language before then so I won't have to have my nana as a translater the whole time. I don't really think I need to know how to read or write but I will learn that later. I'm learning how sentence structure works and TONS of phrases...But how long will it take to be fluent?

Katib el Kitab? Is it just another excuse to have pre-marital sex? A bit like Mut'a?

Basically, I've just understood what Katib el Kitab is, apparently it's an(Arab) marriage where the Imam comes to your house, and secretly gets you married. Then you both try eachother out for a few weeks, even months. But remember, you're not living together, no, just meeting eachother for sex when necessary.

Now if you're both happy, then you make it official to the public, have the ceremony and what have you. But if not (which is more than likely) then you just call the Imam back to the house and 'secretly' get a divorce.

Sex creates an unbreakable bond for eternity with the sex partner, that's why it needs to happen only within the eternal bond of 'actual' marriage. But this other Kitab el Kitab way, is nothing like marriage, rather like "dating" not living together, having sex whenever you want, how will you ever cherish the joys of married life then. Will you not just take sex for granted.

If you're against this type of marriage, star this Q.

80's songs with a middle eastern influence?

Looking for some 80's songs that either have a middle eastern/bellydance influence to their music or lyrics, or some sort of ethnic flare to their music. Besides the obvious 'Walk Like an Egyptian' by the Bangles. Any help is awesome. thanks!

How long does it take to learn a language with Rosetta Stone?

You will NEVER learn a language using Rosetta Stone. You can gain a very basic familiarity and you may become conversational at a very low level (weather, food, how you're doing) but you won't gain anything close to fluency. That said, it's a good tool for anyone who doesn't have the time or money to hire a tutor and learn the old-fashioned way. College classes are the middle ground and if you take two years worth, you should be minimally conversant.Fluency takes roughly 10,000 hours of intense study. Language proficiency is measured in half levels beginning with 0+ and ending with 5. The levels are on a logarithmic scale. Rosetta Stone should get you to about a 1+ level. That means you should be able to order food, discuss the weather, ask for basic necessities, and with a lot of hand gestures, survive. But don't expect any more than that. If the native speaker replies to you in anything but the most basic terms, you will still be lost.Language acquisition is hard. Rosetta Stone tells us it's easy. I spent two years in class with native Russians learning the language (and I'd taken two years in college before starting that program.) Seven hours a day in class with 3-5 hours of homework every night. After all that, I reached a 3+ level of proficiency. So if you just want to be able to get by (keeping in mind most of the world speaks English) RS will do just fine. Otherwise, well, not so much. Good luck!
