Home-made Rat Food Recipes

How do I make the best homemade rat food?

Pet store mixes are the absolute worst. They are very unbalanced!

Rats, or any other rodent, actually should not eat so many seeds at all. Seeds are incredibly fattening. In the wild, rats will eat grains, not seeds. And since grains have little protien, you will also need a seperate protien source, like dry dog food. As well, they should get other supplements in the form of fresh fruits and veggies.

I feed my rats what I consider to be one of the most well balanced diets, specificaly for rats. And it is also just about the cheapest thing you can buy.

It does involve a bit of hunting for you, but if you know of a store that carrier food items in bulk, you can get everything in one place, and for very little. The mix consists of mostly grains, high quality dog (or cat) food, as well as some other things.

How can I make homemade foods for cats?

Because I worked at libraries for the better part of two decades and know what near-infinite resources are there, I recommend looking for at least 3 to 5 books on the subject of feline nutritional needs. There are recipes and suggestions for ingredients in books and online.Having tried recipes for cat treats from a single book years ago, and finding my cats liked none of them, I've concluded that multiple sources are necessary in this type of research. The more you know, the better your homemade product and the healthier your pets will be. Just keep in mind that cats have evolved to eat meat. Our house cats can handle a bit of vegetable matter and grain, but they rely on animal protein for complete nutrition, and they must take in the proper level of taurine and moisture with their food.

How can you make homemade cat food gravy?

Next time you eat a chicken (with the bones, whole or pieces) gather up the stuff you would normally throw away. You know, left over pieces, skin, fat, bones, everything. In a large pot fill it almost to the top with water. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Toss in the chicken leftovers. On top of your stove (not in the oven. Not in the microwave) heat on high until it is boiling hard. TURN THE HEAT DOWN until it is just BARELY boiling. Put the top of the pot on, and let it simmer for about three hours. You will need to stir it all up about every 20 minutes, and you may need to add more water if it gets below half full.Let it cool. Put a large colander in a larger bowl. Pour the contents from the pot into the colander. Lift the colander out of the bowl. This should leave only the liquid in the bowl and at this point you have made home made chicken stock but it also works really well as a gravy for dry cat (or dog) food. Pour the liquid from the bowl into a resealable microwaveable container. Use what you need for this feeding then refrigerate the rest. The next day simply microwave the container to warm up the gravy a bit, use what you need, and once again refrigerate the rest. It will stay fresh for about 30 days in your fridge. We are not finished. In the colander, you should have all the leftovers from the chicken except the liquid. Pick through the leftovers separating the meat from the rest. Save the meat and throw out the rest. If there is a lot of meat left over make yourself a good chicken-salad sandwich (see recipe somewhere else but it is easy). If there is not much meat left toss what is there into the pet’s dish.Enjoy.

How to make homemade rat food?

I can help you! I make my four girls "Suebee's Diet" for rats. Its a great diet! They maintain their weight very well on it.

First off I feed them Oxbow Rat Lab Block which I really recommend. Its like a block food with a mixture of all the nutrients they need to stay healthy. I feed them a dish full of lab blocks and a dish full of the mix daily.

So this is the mix:

Quaker Oats (NOT the instant or flavored) - 1 cup
Rice Cakes (gluten & salt free & not flavored) - 2 cakes crumbled up
Multi-Grain Cheerios - 1 cup
Flax Cereal - 1 cup
Wheaties Cereal - 1 cup (I break them apart)
Whole Wheat Spiral Noodles - 1 cup
Flavored Spiral Noodles (spinach, carrot & tomato) - 1 cup
Pumpkin Seeds (NO salt) - 1/2 cup
Sunflower Seeds (NO salt) - 1/2

And sometimes if I find dried cranberries or dried banana chips in the store I will add about 3/4 of a cup to the mix.
This makes quote a big batch and will last my four girls about a month, so it will last your probably about two months.
Each day they get 1/4 cup serving. Each rat only needs 15 ml each, per day. So 60 ml = 1/4 cup
So if you add up your two rats = 30 ml which would be 1/8 of a cup. SO that should be all you are giving them which will help maintain their weight.
BUT, if you aren't giving them the lab blocks (which I really recommend) then just give them the 1/4 cup scoop.

My girls also get half a container of apple, carrot, banana, or strawberry baby food throughout the week. They also get a variety of fruits, vegetables, and table scraps throughout the week.

Good luck! And if you have ANY questions about the mix then feel free to email me at mady.rueg@yahoo.com

Homemade baked rat treats?

Rats like penut butter on bread like crazy. That's the best stuff out there to give to a rat for a treat. I feed mine that all the time and it's good to train them too.

Is it possible to make homemade goldfish food and what would the ingredients be?

I make a homemade gelatin-based food that my goldfish love. There are many different recipes out there. I will give you a couple links.Feeding Goldfish The Healthy WayGoldfish and Aquarium Board Gel Food RecipesMost of these gel foods are packed with nutrients, can be stored in the freezer and thawed as needed, and provide a nice variety for your fish. I usually omit the vitamins and other tablets some recipes call for, and instead alternate feeding various homemade foods, commercially available pellets, live foods, and sometimes just boiled peas or zucchini. Food is an important part of the life of a goldfish--I think it increases their quality of life if you feed them a variety of healthy foods.

What ingredients should you put in a homemade parrot food mix?

What type of birdie?? Smaller and larger birds require different food presentations. It also depends on what the species is endemic to, and what they would eat in the wild. Dark greens, veggies, nuts, grains, sprouts, fruits (without the seeds), sweet potato (for birdie mash), hard boiled egg (throughly cooked, I suggest only the yolks for protein.) Etc.. it depends on the bird and what type of “mix” you’re putting together. For budgies and conures as well as other parakeet’s and small birds, I suggest topping mix with chia seed. Or flax, or even both. This works well for seedaholics who won’t eat anything but seed. Just a sprinkle will do. Remember to never add any veggies that are a part of the onion family, they’re toxic to parrots. (onions, garlic etc..)
