Certified letter from IRS?
You don't want to ignore it. It could be a notice from the irs proposing a change to a past tax return. They give you a certain amount of time to respond back to the irs as to whether or not you agree with the change. If you don't reply in the amount of time it could end up that they win by default even if they are wrong, because you didn't reply in time. Always look at irs notices.
What happens if you don't pick up a certified letter?
It will eventually be returned to the sender. In my experience it usually stays at the post office for about a month before it is returned. They do not get sent to the dead letter office. Certified mail with signature required ALWAYS has a return address.

You should have been left a notice with instructions for receiving your letter. You can request re-delivery if you will be gone, or go to post office for pickup. Be aware that post office hours may be reduced on Saturday.

Why would someone receive a certified letter from the IRS????
IRS sends certified letters 30 -45 days after they had sent you a letter and you didn't reply in the allowed time. Usually a certified letter is for unfiled tax returns and IRS sends the Notice of Defiency certified giving you 90 days to file the missing returns, or IRS will file for you. IRS will file as single, no exemption, no deductions other than standard deduction. The letter (LTR3217C) provides you with the summary of income (wage information reported to IRS) and if you don't file your own return then more likely to have a balance due. Once you go to the PO to pick up your notice call the phone number listed on the letter. And be patient you may be on hold for a while. If you don't want to call then just read the notice and provide IRS with the information requested with the the allotted time.
If the post office is holding my mail, will they also hold certified letters?
Absolutely. As a former mailman, we sort the mail in the morning and certified letters come in a separate bundle apart from your standard envelopes and flats. We actually have to sign for certified letters, international registered packages, as well as priority express. Accountability eh?So when the clerk's bring us our certified mail, we sign and sort it to your address. However, if we mark your address due to the hold, we'll notice right away. We scan your ‘ certified’ as Vacation hold then deposit it with the rest of your mail. Upon delivering it to you or bringing it to the desk if you come pick it up yourself, we will scan it and you can sign it.
My landlord sent me a certified letter, however I am not able to pick it up until monday. What could it be for
I got a notice from the post office saying I have a certified letter that I can pick up from my landlord. Since it is a Saturday and I was at work when it came I am not going to be able to get it until Monday. It has me a little freaked out. What could it be about? My rent has only been late once by 1 week. My dog did apparently bite the neighbor the other day when my roommate had her outside. Any advice????
Does a mechanic have to send me a certified letter before he sends my car to the salvage yard????!!!!?
Many shops will and do have a policy that states that property left over thirty days can be sold. However I do not think that would hold up in the courts system. If no written agreement was done then it will be your word against his. On another note vehicle are not to be sold for salvage unless accompanied by a title. At least in Texas it does. I think if that rule was not valued everywhere chop shops and salvage places would be doing a booming business. Talk to the owner of the shop and go get an attorney. Good luck
What happens if you do not pick up certified mail?
A couple years ago I received a notice from the post office saying that I had a letter that I needed to pick up... They sent me a photo copy of the letter but I did not recognize the return address so I did not pick it up. What happens to the letter? Also, if it was a court summons or someone suing me, the return address would have been from the court system right? I know it has been a while but I have a lot of financial debt and I am just worried that it might have been something that can have bad ramifications if I don't look into it... If I did not recognize the return address, chances are that it was not from the legal system right??
