How Long Can Lice Hold Their Breath

Can you use olive oil to treat head lice?

No, it doesn't work and I will tell you why. The idea behind using Olive Oil and other products alike is that it suffocates the adult lice. The fact is, it can do just that, but lice can hold their breath for up to 8 hours. So the olive oil would have to stay on for at least that long. But you have to remember that this only has a chance of killing the adult lice. Nits (eggs) still remain attached to the shaft of the hair, and there are far more nits than adult lice. Adult lice live up to 30 days and on average they each lay 6-8 eggs (nits) per day. I'll let you do the math on that. So how do you get rid of them? Extensive combing and assessment. I would strongly recommend contacting a professional and reputable lice removal salon. If you notice with most over-the-counter medications and other treatments, combing is almost always recommended as part of the treatment. And that's because it really is the only way to get rid of those little buggers. I'm a Licensed Practical Nurse, former school nurse, and now owner of a lice removal service. I hope this helps.

How long can lice hold their breath?

Not long but the problem isn't getting rid of the adults, it's getting rid of the eggs. Just immersing the head in water isn't going to help that.

See the link below. You need to both shampoo with lice killer and also use some kind of pesticide for your whole house, especially the room where the person who has lice sleeps.

About how long does it take to treat lice and for it to be completely gone?

Oh my gosh, I feel for you! I just went through this just about 3 weeks ago. It is no fun, and depending on the age of the child (I assume there is one?), it can be hard to get out the eggs. I got called by the YMCA camp counselor and told to pick my 5 yr old up ASAP and start treatment. We went to the store and bought the kit which includes the lice shampoo, gel for helping to loosen the eggs from the hair, bedding spray, and a lice comb. I found that the comb was useless. Anyway, we did the treatment the first day, and repeated the shampoo 9 days later. In between treatments, I constantly looked for lice eggs and pulled them out. It is a pain in the butt! Just remember, the best treatment is to get rid of the eggs. They are glued to the hair strands, so they do not wash out. Make sure to wash all bedding, and spray what you can not wash. Also, things like stuffed animals and pillows can be thrown in the dryer on high for 30 minutes. The heat will kill them. Good luck, and try to have lots of patience. It is really hard to pick out eggs with a consantly moving kid! By the way, we have not had any more lice since then. JUst pick, pick, pick the eggs out! And throw away all hair brushes.

Lice the mayo treatment?

I have lice and I'm gonna try the mayo treatment and use a shower cap. I've had lice for 3 weeks and have been using vinegar, and the chemicals. I think I should go natural this time around. I really want the lice gone, and I have a ton of nits. So basically how does this "mayo treatment" help, like does it kill the lice, kill nits? Any other ideas i could use? Especially to get rid of nits?

Can you "drown" head lice?

It sounds like you did not fully eliminate the lice infestation in the first place. Lice eggs are extremely small, about the size of a poppy seed. They can be easily missed when treating a lice infested head.If lice eggs are missed they will hatch and start a new life cycle. This process will continue until all adult bugs and all eggs are removed from the hair.Unfortunately, lice can hold their breath for a long time. So, drowning lice with water will not work. Many people use smothering agents, like oil and mayonnaise to suffocate lice, but this method is not 100% effective. Smothering agents may get rid of adult bugs, but they will have no effect on the lice eggs. There are other natural remedies available that are specifically designed to get rid of both lice and eggs in one day.Check out our blog for more information: http://clearlice.com/blog

How long can a horse stay under water?

Horses cannot stay under water. The only time their entire body might be submerged would be during a difficult river crossing, where, while swimming as horses do, with neck stretched forwards and head sticking up to keep water out their nostrils, water might wash over the horses head at which point most horses would either panic or violently toss their heads higher in a bid to get the water out their nostrils.

What is the best way to get rid of head lice?

well ...prioderm lotion is the best....but it stinks and everyone will know you have lice....but it is the best.....alternitavly...and this is cheaper and far more effective...take the offending head.....and chop that fooker off

Why aren't lice killed by submerging them in water for a long period of time?

They can hold their breath longer than you have patience to keep your head underwater. They breathe through tiny holes in their bodies so it is possible to drown them or suffocate them eventually. You could use an oily substance such as dimeticone to physically block their tiny breathing holes. Other methods to get rid of them include combing them out with a special comb or poisoning them with insecticide. One of my patients became so frustrated she got rid of the head lice by just shaving off all of her hair.
