How Much Blow By Out The Crankcase Is Normal

Oil coming out of crankcase air vent hose on mower... is engine bad? (yardman mtd)?

yardman mtd 13.5 hp riding mower 13ac762f755 (2007'ish i think)

Mower died when i engaged the blades, then it started smoking really bad. Looked and saw this hose was disconnected and it looked like oil was spitting out... the liquid looked a little blueish/gray instead of jet black, so maybe gas was part of it too? anyway i put the hose back on and turned it on... after about a minute, the oil started seeping out and then the hose popped back off and sprayed the oil everywhere.

ive read that too much oil can cause this, but the mower does not have too much oil in it.

here's a picture of the part, i think its called the crankcase vent hose? it goes into the bottom of the air filter.

a friend said it means the engine is bad, wanted to see if thats what you guys think.

Can a clogged muffler cause high pressure in the crankcase?

I've never heard of a plugged up muffler. Chances are better that the catalytic converter is plugged up. Catalytic converters look like a muffler. They are found in the tail pipe in front of the muffler. More likely if there is a blockage that's the problem rather than the muffler. I don't know what you mean when you say " muffler is having a clogged filter" because mufflers don't have filters. After the exhaust leaves the engine it goes down the pipe , through the catalytic converter then back into the pipe and down to the muffler where it exit's.There may be a short piece of pipe after the muffler depending on the car.

What causes oil to blow by the dipstick?

If you are lucky, it is just a stuck PCV, which sometimes can be cleaned, but can be replaced for under $10 in most cars without disassembling anything (valve is at one end of the tube from the engine (often valve cover) to the intake. This valve allows air to be sucked out of the oil pan to create a slight vacuum and help reduce oil consumption. This valve is on most cars since the mid-1960’s.Some have said a bad o-ring on the dip stick, but many cars do not have one to go bad.But more seriously, it is a worn engine or stuck rings from not changing your oil on time or not using a thermostat. If the rings can’t push out (from the pressure of the combustion), the combustion gasses will “blow-by” the rings into the oil pan and out the oil filler or dip stick. You could have also caused it by using oil thicker than recommended in your manual, reducing lubrication on startup and in general.

Small engine is blowing oil from breather tube, 12 1/2 horse Briggs, OHV.?

There can be a couple causes of this... I finally won my battle with the same problem today.

Probable causes are:
1. Excessive blowby - cause maybe by stuck/broken piston rings, or more likely head gasket (they tend to blow out right between the cylinder and the pushrod area)
2. Faulty crankcase breather (like a PCV valve on a car, the thing bolted to the motor that has the rubber hose going to the air breather)

In my situation, with the air filter removed, I had a fountain of oil shooting out the air breather a foot or two high... removing the cylinder head reveled nothing obvious - the gasket looked like I just installed it, but I did notice some signs of leakage from the exhaust valve seal, and that was it. I had previously taken the crankcase breather off and soaked it in mineral spirits and blew it out with compressed air; did these, same thing.
Talking to a mechanic, discovered that these motors simply DO have enough blowby to shoot the oil out like that if the crank breather is worn out... replaced it.... WAY better.
Although, oil DID start to blow out, but not as quick or as much.
I have a feeling I had a stuck ring a bit too, as a few starts and runs until it did it, and it is fine now.

Also be sure to smell the oil and ensure that it isn't contaminated with gas badly, as that could contribute too.

Long story short: buy the crank breather and replace it - it's about $15 I think, and is very likely the problem, and even if it isn't, likely will be sometime soon anyway.

Hope this helps.

Is for a Toyota 15TD engine normal to have some smoke comming out of the dipstick hole?

It's not normal.
When a smoke comes out from a dipstick, it means that the compression and combustion inside our cylinder is leaking through the piston rings. Try to see on the breather hose, surely white smoke is exiting there.
Some of your piston rings are already worn out and needs replacement.
Replace it as soon as possible. Failure to do so can damage more the components inside of your engine. Your engine oil thickens and does failure to lubricate the main bearings, conn. rod bearings, Oil pump, Cam shaft journals, crankshaft journals, Rockers and shaft and the valves.
Don't wait until your engine knocks. The longer you take it for granted, the bigger the pain in the pocket.

Why is my car blowing lots of air out the valve cover?

It's called "blow-by" and is caused by exhaust gas leaking past the pistons during the combustion cycle. It's an indication that the rings are not sealing between the pistons and the cylinder walls. The cause can be worn pistons or carbon buildup around the rings preventing the rings from keeping a tight seal against the cylinder wall. In either case, it's typically the result of inadequate maintenance.
The exhaust gas leaking past the cylinders can build up quite a bit of pressure inside the crankcase (and rocker cover) resulting in what you're seeing as well as pressure against the crankshaft seals, causing them to fail and leak quite a bit of oil.

This can also be caused by your valves not seating properly. Check your valve lash with a feeler gauge after you've set your motor to TDC, making sure the first rocker arms are loose. If they're tight, rotate your crank with a wrench 360 degrees till it is in TDC again.
