Why do you support your favorite basketball team?

Having been born in New York, the “Mecca of Basketball”, there were always high expectations for the Knicks to succeed based off of their media exposure and also being the most valuable franchise in Basketball. I was born in the midst of the 90’s run with Patrick Ewing and John Starks but I learned about basketball during the Stephon Marbury and Eddy Curry days (not superstars, to say the least). Yet, there was always this belief, usually unwarranted, that this was the year we’d at least make the playoffs and have a shot at championship glory, but through poor management and unwise financial decisions, like signing players way past their primes (think Steve Francis, Penny Hardaway, Andrea Bargnani, Baron Davis, Tracy McGrady, this list can go on and on…), we’ve had a sub par transition to the 2000’s. Having only made the playoffs five times and making it past the first round only once since 2000, most people would lose hope and jump ship to another winning franchise like the Warriors or Celtics or worse, the Brooklyn Nets. But as a die hard fan, nothing would excite me more than Madison Square Garden dropping a banner in the rafters for our third championship and that thought alone is enough for me to standby this team through highs and the super lows (read grand canyon) and continue to support for that one day we come out on top. I like where we’re headed now with a new coach and front office and great young assets that can propel us to glory in this new age NBA.

Can you go to one high school but play on another high schools sports team?

You can be Title IXd into a sport for the following reasons:Your school doesn’t offer the appropriately gendered team for you. You are legally allowed to play if you make the team. (ie, your school has men’s hockey, but you’re a strong female player)You attend a magnet school or homeschool that doesn’t offer your sport. My school didn’t offer cheerleading, so I cheered for another school. If your school doesn’t offer your sport, with consent of two principals, you can usually play for another school. That second school is typically your neighborhood high school. I know people who did that for swimming.

Should schools begin having esports teams similar to how they have football and basketball teams?

Having grown up in Kentucky, I am a lifelong college basketball fan. But I think the better question is, “How do we get schools back to being all about school and no longer being so intertwined with athletics?”Many schools rely heavily on athletics for generating revenue and attracting students. This dependency leads to all manner of corruption and exploitation. See the University of North Carolina encouraging its athletes to take counterfeit courses and the University of Louisville providing prostitutes for its athletes and recruits for two recent egregious examples. The highest athletic levels of the NCAA have little to do with educating athletes any more. It has become a big business and business is booming.
