Why does animating in Photoshop CS5 suck so bad?
Because Photoshop is not actually animation software. Photoshop is an image editor first and foremost. The animation capabilities of Photoshop are quite limited - it can be used for creating simple animated GIFs for the web - but that's about it.

i have photoshop cs4 and im trying to test out something with timeline but the option to convert is not there? there isnt anything in the corner of the animation bar.. i had timeline in cs5 but i had a problem with cs5 so i deleted it.. how do i fix this?

Put different images of stars each on a separate layer - you need one layer for each frame of the animation, then save it as an animated GIF.

I don't recommend merging multiple animations. It's not practical for two reasons: 1) they would all have to have the same exact amount of frames, not to mention be running at the same speed, or some will look slow, while others too fast. 2) Size of the file -- dimensions, frame count, and color depth are a major concern when making animated gifs. You want to try to keep the file size down as much as possible, so it doesn't lag as it gets further from the start of the animation, or run choppy due to various reasons (user-specs, size is too large, browser capabilities/issues, etc...) It's hard enough to keep the file size down with just one animated gif at times, let alone trying to merge several. Try to keep the whole thing under a few seconds long, and as small as possible dimensions-wise. Good luck. If you can pull it off (smoother than the example you provided), that would be great.
