How To Help My Fancy Parakeet

How do I tame my parakeets to like me? I've had them for about a year now.

To train a bird you have to get them used to you.The best way to do this is to sit with them while they are in their cage. Do this twice a day for three days. After a few days of doing this twice a day then place your hand in the cage, and leave it there. Do not do anything with your hand. Just let it sit in the door of the cage doing nothing. Do this twice a day for three days.A week has now passed. now you put your hand in and raise one finger to the bird and scratch it behind the head. If it moves away then go back to the last step for another three days. If it accepts the scratching, then do this when ever the bird offers its head to you. After three days of head scratching, move your finger in front of its belly and push backwards against its legs softly. It will either become scared and fly away from your hand, or it will step onto your finger. If it flies away then retract your hand and go back to the head scratchign stage another three days.If it goes on your hand then start to do it again for a week. It should be used to being on your finger after a week of this. You can now attempt to take it out of the cage on your finger. make sure you are in a closed room. so it does not accidentally fly away and get lost (at this stage it will not want to leave you, but may accidentally get lost). If it does fly around then it is easy to get it back by leaving the cage open and putting food and water in it.

Calling all bird experts!!! What is the difference between a fancy parakeet and a rare parakeet?

I have a rare parakeet (that I got from petsmart) and it is slightly smaller than a regular parakeet. They also come in different colors. It wasn't more expensive than a regular parakeet so I don't think there is much difference. This pretty much should answer your question:

I think they are just selling terms to get people to buy them.

Do fancy parakeets talk?

All parakeets talk, they are called fancy parakeets. Because of the rare colors that they have but all can talk. When I first got mine (a rare parakeet) the store told me they didn't talk but I went online and surfed YouTube and there are some cute budgies who sing very clearly. They seam to almost whisper I exceptionally like the one that makes r2-d2 sounds!

My month old Fancy Parakeet fell into my fish tank is he going to be ok?

I just bought him today and he is only a few months old. When we took him out of the box he bit my moms hand and got away. While flying around he fell into my fish tank. He didn't go fully under but did get his tail feathers and belly wet. I just want to know if he is going to be alright. He's cleaning himself and eating so I assume that's a good thing.

What does it mean when your fancy parakeet snugs into a blanket?

I have a pet parakeet since about a week ago. He's really good, isn't sacred but now im curious. I was lying in bed playing with Him then after a while he starts like digging under the pillow, then I couldn't see him so I lifted the pillow up and there a was. Then I was sitting criss cross and with a blanket over me and he snugged in my crotch and was just like hanging out. I have to clean my room but I don't want to put him in his cage cuz I think he's cold so I put a little blanket on the floor and he's cuddling inside it. What is it he's doing? When my mom comes home were going to the pet store because I saw there was like a rent there for bods. It was small and looked snug, so I think he. Old cuz it's summer but me and him are in the basement so with their on he might be cold. But we didn't put him by a vent and we closed all the vents in the room

Are parakeets noisy,or smell?

Parakeets are not stinky, even when the cage gets dirty. Few birds are. However, they are messy; they throw seed shells and feathers out of the cage. They poop on things if you let them out. Of course, that's easy to clean up.
Compared to larger parrots, parakeets are not noisy at all. If you have several of them, their chattering can get a little bit loud, but still not like a bigger parrot. When a parakeet wants your attention, it can call you with a loud chirp. Mine tells me when she's out of food or water, or wants out of the cage. But I wouldn't call her noisy. They don't have that big a voice.

How do I get my parakeets to stop being scared of me?

I, too, had parakeets as a child, and to expand upon Gabrielle's answer: go slowly. First, just spend time in the room with them. Go about your daily business, give them food, talk to them. After they are less nervous when you're simply in the room, do the hand thing for a while every single day (put your hand in the cage, don't try to touch them). After a few days of this (or possibly a couple of weeks), you can start putting your finger up to their bellies so they hop on, but don't pull your hand out of the cage with them on it. When they're comfortable on your hand, you can move on to taking them out of the cage. It's all in steps. I did this with my parakeet, Buddy, when I was 9 years old. I followed instructions from a book, and it was quite easy. He was very attached to me.However, I should note that parakeets tend to bond with one other bird. If you want a parakeet to feel close to you, keep only one. Having two or more will make it more difficult for them to socialize with you (in my experience). When I got a cat, and found my attentions were split between the two, I decided to get Buddy a friend. He was very happy with his little girlfriend, and they fed each other and nuzzled very cutely. Buddy still would come out and spend time with me, but he became more aggressive and occasionally bit me. He would fly back to the cage to placate the calls of his friend. The second bird (Lil' Jinx) never really got used to me. She immediately bonded to Buddy and had no interest in me whatsoever. Taking her out of the cage made her very frightened. If I were going to get another parakeet, I'd only get one.

There's a mouse kept going into my parakeet's cage. What should I do?!?

Mice carry a disease known as the hanta virus. It can kill humans. It gets into the lungs and can cause all kinds of upper respitory problems for birds and humans.

Sounds more like a husbandry problem then anything else. Which means you need to be cleaning better then you are. Seeds are notorious problems for mice. Not only that, it's NOT a proper diet for your bird. Plus they don't eat seeds in the wild. A so called keet seed diet consists of only millet taken off the branches and bagged or boxed.

Millet does NOT grow in australia. I've studied these species along with cockatiels for 7 years in the wild. Seeds cause fatty liver disease and cuts the life span down to 4-6 yrs.

Changing the diet of your pet keet might deter mice from even coming into your home plus give your bird a longer living life span.

Poison will only kill other pets along with the mice. Setting traps is a way to go. Sorry vermin lovers, but the hanta virus is out there. I've supplied a link for you to read about it.
