How To Tell If Your Toe Is Sprained Jammed Or Broken

How do I know if my toe is jammed, broken, or sprained?

Sounds like a sprain - but broken toes are hard to diagnose. If you go to the doctor, they can't really put a cast on or anything, but it's still a good idea to get it checked out if you're worried.

As for speeding recovery, use the RICE regimen:

Rest - stay off the toe as much as you can. Don't practice for a few days.

Ice - Use frozen veggies or an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel and apply it to the toe for no more than 10 minutes at a time several times a day.

Compression - Use an ACE bandage to wrap the toe(s). This and the ice will help to bring down swelling and heal you quicker.

Elevation - When you're just sitting around for the first few days of the injury, try to put your affected foot up. Above heart level is best if you can (this keeps the blood from flooding the area). You can also put books or bricks under the foot of your bed to elevate your feet while you sleep.

DON'T put heat on the sprain/break, and really do try to stay off it. The RICE regimen has worked for me many times, just try to stick to it. Good luck!

How can I tell if my bone is broken or sprained?

I presume if you’re asking this question it isn’t obvious which generally means an ankle injury - though similar principle apply to other areas that can be “sprained”.The best answer really is that if it isn’t obvious then it doesn’t matter that much. The treatment for an ankle injury is pretty much the same either way. It is based on the clinical grade (i.e. Findings from examination and the history you provide). If you really need to know then having an x-ray or even an ultrasound scan might clarify it though an MRI is best. This might help your doctor/physiotherapist optimize treatment and give you a better idea of outcome though probably won’t change much as treatment/rehab is mostly based on clinical findings and progress (note I’m a Radiologist so am not anti-imaging - I just prefer it be used judiciously!).Generally treatment involves initially protecting the joint by supporting (the degree of support from casting to rigid brace to strapping/soft brace depends on the clinical degree of instability. As pain-free use returns the degree of support is reduced and the mobility/strengthening exercises are increased. Overall timeframe to get back to full activity varies depending on the grade of injury but is typically 1–3 weeks for grade I, 3–6 weeks for grade II and 6–8 weeks for grade III. Occasionally surgery will be required when all conservative treatment fails though delaying this is not a problem and is rarely ever the best first treatment choice. You do need expert input into this. If you try to immobilize for a period and then return straight to full activity you’ll almost certainly re-injure it.Once you’ve returned to full activity then strategies to avoid re-injury are critical - strengthening, stretching, balance exercises, perhaps routine strapping during high-risk activities.

Sprained, jammed, or broken on my pinky toe.?

Today my little brother who weighs 27 pounds jumped on my pinky toe and it HURT SO BAD! a lot of people think i jammed it but i dont know what that means.... On my left toe that is and to the right in the middle it is lightish darkish purple and it is swollend. i can walk, run a little bit and stand without it hurting but my mom thinks it is broken my grandma who is a nurse thinks it is broken me and my dad think it is sprained. also im not going to the docter because im so afriad of docters please help!

How can I speed the healing of a jammed/sprained toe?

Well, if you have iced it for the first 24 hours and the swelling has stopped, it is time to get the blood flowing through there to speed up the healing process. So now it is time to start adding heat for short periods of time. Alternated with ice, you can expect to recover a little faster. As you know, it's hard to splint a toe, but taping it to your other toe may ease the pain of putting on a sock. If swelling persists, make sure you keep it elevated above the heart as much as possible.

Is my toe broken, dislocated or sprained?

About 30 minutes ago I hit my pinky toe against my bedroom door. At first it just felt like a normal stub your toe situation. Then it hurt a bit more than normal so I felt it. Then I felt it and felt a bit of a bump on the bone or muscle. Now it hurts to put weight on that part of my foot. The toe looks red and swollen.
