I Accidently Bought High Protein Dog Food For My Puppy

Accidentally feeding our puppy adult dog food for over a month?

Oh, gosh no! You are NOT an awful mom and while there are nutritional benefits to feeding him puppy food, so much of the difference between the two is good marketing, different sizes of the kibble pieces...and how much it costs.

Do you realize that many of our pets eat better than some humans in third-world countries? Even if your dog only got adequate amounts of adult food from the time he could eat, he would still be healthy. A LOT of the hype about puppy food and kitten food is for the owners, rather than the pets themselves.

I can only imagine the thumbs down my answer will get from food purists who think that only one brand will do, and blah, blah, blah. My pug was found abandoned in the woods, living on bugs and whatever her little "puppy ingenuity" could rustle up. I gave her puppy food her first year, and she is thriving, in spite of her early months of suffering.

I accidentally bought my small breed puppy large breed puppy food?

You can send it back or give it to your dog, it's up to you. One large bag of food isn't going to decide your dogs fate. Just switch back to the right food next time if you decide to use it. The main difference between small breed and large breed food is usually the added ingredients in the large breed food. Large breed food usually contains extra ingredients like glucosamine and chondroitin to help prevent arthritis since larger breed dogs usually end up having this problem. Smaller breed dog foods usually have ingredients that give your dog more energy. And of course puppy foods have ingredients for energy and growth. ***The important thing to know is that there are no ingredients added or missing that will be harmful to your dog.*** Remember if you decide to use this food to switch between foods gradually (over a week or so) by mixing the foods together to prevent stomach issues (diarrhea and vomiting).

Accidentally bought senior dog food for my 3yr old maltxshih?

A lot of the times, senior dog food will have the same or similar ingredients as the regular adult formulas. They will be slightly different ratios than the adult but the same ingredients. While a 3 year old dog does need a little more than what's in a senior food, the senior won't hurt them to eat it. As one of the other posters said as well, most stores will take back food if you got the wrong one and either give you a refund or let you exchange it.

I hope that helps!

I accidentally bought dry dog food thats 7+ for my 6 month old puppy and opened it is this bad?

Not going to harm him, but sure isn't good enough nutrition - but then again, no purina is.

Switch to a better brand, with meat listed as the first ingredient, no corn meal or wheat gluten --- READ the ingredients - meat should be listed first.
I feed Canidae to my dogs, but there are other decent dry kibbles, certainly not purina or other supermarket junk.

You might want to either get some decent puppy kibble and mix it with the purina, or at least add some extra protein to it, white meat, skinless, boneless chicken or chop meat.

Is it ok if i accidentally fed my dog mature adult (senior)dog food instead of regular adult?

Yes, it's fine. A little senior food won't do any harm. Just switch back to the adult formula when you can.

Is it ok for adult dogs to eat puppy food? [dry food]?

I accidentally bought puppy for my adult dog [5yrs old]? will this be ok? Will it do him harm?

if it matters:
I bought innova puppy oppose to innova red meat -small bites. Both bags are red which caused the mix up. = (

Any answer[s] is appreciated. Thank you dog owners. = )

Whats the difference between adult dog food and puppy food besides side?

Puppy food is higher in fat and protein than adult dog food because puppies will burn more calories as they are growing than adult dogs will. A 6 month old pit bull will not have any problems from eating adult dog food. Your dog is still growing and therefor still requires more calories than he would as an adult, but he is past the majority of his growing and his growth rate should have slowed down considerably by now. The adult food might cause an upset stomach, some loose stools or diarrhea, and/or some gas if your dog does not get a varied diet and has never eaten anything but the puppy food. But that would be because of the sudden change in food from what his system is used to, not because the adult food is "bad" for him.

Personally I prefer not to feed my large breed dogs (german shepherds) puppy food at all...not even the large breed puppy formulas...because when large breed puppies grow too fast they will develop skeletal and joint problems and the extra fat and protein in puppy food promote faster growth. Even most people who do like to feed their large breed puppies a puppy food usually recommend switching to adult food between 6 and 12 months (depending on who you talk to). If you're mom's that worried about it, then just buy a bag of puppy food and mix the puppy and the adult food.

Can i feed my puppy adult dog food?

There is really very little difference in puppy food and adult food. Puppy food generally is a little higher in calories and a little higher in protein.
