I Cut The Quick Of The Claw

What to do about exposed quick in cat claws?

I will be taking Perla to the vet soon, but wanted to know if anyone else had this issue.

Perla, my 1 year old Siamese, is very good about having her claws clipped, I use a proper cat claw clipper. I clip them maybe once a week - just the very tips - not very far down the nail. Still, somehow she seems to shed her nail layers very quickly and at the bottom of her nails the quick becomes exposed. I imagine it is tender! I try to avoid clipping her nails but she gets these super super long hawk like claws (they get so long so fast!) that catch on the bed and carpet (which seems to really annoy her) so I end up having to clip them anyway.

I have never cut the quick - and it looks pink and healthy. I don't know how to prevent the quick from becoming exposed while still keeping her claws a manageable length. Any advice would be helpful. I will be going to vet soon, but the appointment isn't for two week or so.

Is it bad or painful to cut a dog's dew claw?

It should be trimmed as you would any other claw. Don't cut the quick and keep it short as possible.

If your dog is having probs with it, you may want to talk to the vet about having it removed next time your dog goes under for a teeth cleaning.

Help! my cat's nail has the quick exposed!?

The bleeding can be stopped using a pinch of flour on the nail, or pet stores sell a powder called Quik-Stop. Once the bleeding is stopped, it’s important to keep the nail clean while healing occurs. The length of time required for healing can range from a few days, to well over a week. Twice daily washings should be performed using an antibacterial soap like Dial. At night, an antibiotic ointment can be applied to the nail and the foot should be wrapped with a thin layer of gauze.

My dog has one curled dew claw. will he bleed to death if I cut it?

He wouldn't even bleed to "death" if he actually lost it. But if you cut it after the vein than he won't bleed at all.If the nail is black and you can not see the vein, it normally stops before the nail starts to really arc and curl.

Does it hurt cats when you cut their nails/claws with a clipper?

Not if you do it correctly. Always use clippers made for cats--not human nail clippers and not dog nail clippers. You should only cut off a little bit. Here's a helpful website:

My dogs dew claw has curled all the way around I can't see if it is in his paw yet can I try and cut that nail?

If you have pet nail trimmers yes you can but don't use human nail clippers they will crush the nails and can cause problems in the nail bed. You need to be so careful not to cut the dog quick which if you dog has white/clear nails is the pink bit in the middle of the claw don't cut to close to that if it has black nail only cut the small amount and just make sure you keep them trimmed regular. if you don't have pet nail clippers of not sure what you are doing them you are best to get a vet to do it. It is so important when a dogs has dew claws that you keep a eye on them as because they don't touch the ground they don't wear down on there own.
