I Got An Email Supposedly From Yahoo How Do I Know If It

I just got an email, supposedly from yahoo..saying yahoo breifcase was being closed? Is this a spam attack?

I'm afraid it's true. I already got an email like that Monday. Y! has announced that it's ending the Briefcase service. It will officially shut down on March 30. You have until then to try to retrieve whatever is stored there before it's all permanently deleted. Go here to read more information on what I'm saying: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/briefca...

I have received a email supposedly from Yahoo asking me to verify my account details. Is this genuinely from?

No, no, NO!!!!!! Y! would never send you an email to verify your account. By clicking on that link, you'll end up giving that information to the phishers. They, in turn, will take over your account and change the password to deny you access to it. Remember Y! does not send you an email to verify your information; rather, the company already has that stored in its servers. If you want to verify your information, then you should do that at Y!'s homepage at the sign-in box. When you sign in there, your personalized sign-in seal appears automatically. This is an indication to you that it's a legitimate Y! site you're signing in to.

As for the message you got, forward that to the following addresses:
phishing@cc.yahoo-inc.com
mail-spoof@cc.yahoo-inc.com

Then give it the spam "heave-ho" into the garbage and leave it be. By taking this advice, you could save your account from being taken over by the phishers.

I got a weird email from supposedly Yahoo Customer Care?!?

100% scam.

That is a scammer trying to hi-jack your email address to spam all your contacts and then use the account to spam hundreds/thousands of others.

Yahoo and all email companies, all banks and all companies in the entire world will NEVER ask for your password, pin or date of birth. No Exceptions Ever.

Ignore and delete that email and any others demanding such information.

If you have responded to a scammer, you are on his 'potential sucker' list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of needing your password, great jobs, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram.

Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don't bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn't worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money, email address or identity to a scammer.

If you google "yahoo email phishing scam", "email hijacked viagara porn spammer" or something similar you will find hundreds of posts of victims and near victims of this type of scam.

In fact, if you check out the section here at Yahoo Answers entitled "Yahoo email, spam and bulk mail" you will find hundreds of questions from victims who have had their email address hi-jacked or spoofed by scammers sending out porn and viagra spam.

How do I know if an email (using Yahoo name) saying I have won money is legitimate?

More than likely, it is NOT a real email, usually scams come out of Nigeria. Like I just told someone else - if you don't know who an email is from, check it as spam and report it...never open email from anyone you don't know. Chances are you're not going to get an email saying you've won...especially from a yahoo (free) email account...

please tell us you didn't give this person any of your personal information? If you did, contact your bank at once and let them know there may be fraudulent activity on your account, explain what happened and ask them to help!
