Can Planes Shut Off Mid Air?

A complete shutdown of the aircraft in mid-flight is theoretically possible but doesn't occur in real life. The engines are not turned off at any time during a flight, although they are often set to idle, especially during descent towards the destination airport. Other systems are designed to operate even when the engines are completely off (with batteries or even with wind power), just in case, so the airplane is never completely shut off.

Jet engines today are so reliable that the average airline captain will never see a jet engine mechanical failure during his career. Unlike car engines, airplane engines are designed to run at or near full power all day long without harm, and they do this regularly without failing. Jet engines are also designed to withstand levels of abuse that would cause an automobile engine to instantly disintegrate; jet engines can not only tolerate such extreme conditions, they can run for long periods with them. A jet engine might be ultimately reduced to molten slag by extreme conditions, but it will run long enough to get the airplane back down to the ground safely, something a mere automobile engine could never do.

How to get over my fear of flying on a plane?? HELP! big flight coming up! :(?

1. Don’t conceal it. Tell the gate agent when you check in, the flight attendant when you board, and the passengers around you when you sit down. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, and what you need is support, not added frustrations by suffering in silence. I know I make a special effort to check in on my fearful fliers several times during a flight.

2. Treat the turbulence like bumps in the road. Don’t tense up or fight it, but instead, let your body sway with the aircraft movements.

3. At check-in, ask for a seat at the very front of the cabin as possible. Turbulence is usually much greater in the back of the aircraft. If you have an extreme dread of flying, don’t try to overcome your fears on a long flight. Take the shortest flight you can and preferably in the biggest plane possible.

4. Keep distracted. Watch the movie even if it’s bad or you have seen it already. Read a book or do a crossword puzzle. Do anything that keeps your mind occupied and not dwelling on morbid possibilities.

5. There are various classes for those who are afraid to fly. In some cases the final test is an actual airplane flight. The courses used to be quite expensive, but now with fares being at an all-time low, I am sure the classes are less expensive as well

6. Avoid coffee or other caffeine products as an overly hyper state of mind will only exacerbate your anxiety. But drink other liquids, as dehydration only contributes to the fear process. Some people recommend a glass of wine to calm the nerves, but don’t overdo it.

7. Listen to peaceful and calming music. Your mind tends to wander and hear sounds that either don’t exist or are perfectly normal flight noises.

8. The rubber band technique. Wear a rubber band around your wrist and if you feel yourself becoming agitated, snap the rubber band against your skin. Apparently, the pain is a reality bite, and takes the mind off the turbulence.

9. Avoid gory details. When an air disaster does occur, avoid the graphic details and overplay in the news media. It is important to be informed, but too much is too much.

10. Breathe deeply as often as you can, and remember that the sick bag in front of you can be used as an anti-hyperventilating device as well.

I have an intense fear of being raped on an airplane.?

I've never been on a plane before but I have a huge fear of planes and crashing. I don't mind dying as long as it's not painful and scary. So in the future whenever I plan on flying, I want to take sleeping tablets so if the plane crashes I won't feel it. The problem is, I'm afraid to sleep on a plane full of strangers in case a man rapes or molests me.
What do I do? Does anyone have this fear?

Turbulence in small planes vs. Large planes?

Damn, when you said small planes, I thought you really meant small planes...like less than 8 seats. A 50 seat regional jet is NOT a small plane!
Regional jets are just as fast and durable as the larger Boeing style jets. They are smaller and I think a bit less roomy, but they are not more turbulent.
Usually unstable air, and the airplane's speed are the determining factors that makes a flight more or less turbulent.

Flying to Mexico, you may experience some turbulence from the surrounding mountains, but the smaller aircraft size will not be a significant factor since those airplanes fly just as fast as the larger ones.

How to get over fear of flying?!?

There's a ton of things you can do to make your flight a little easier, and I'll list them below, but if you really want to get over your fear of flying, the only thing you can do is to go on flights. Go on as many as you can. Remember that these planes are up in the air all the time, and that their safety record is huge.

I survived a helicopter crash in the Army, and I was terrified to get on a plane after the crash. I used the tips below to help get past the flight. Little by little, I've gotten over my fear of flying. Last week I had 3 different flights, one 5 hours long.


Fear of flying is normal and it happens to a lot of people. here's a few tips and some facts about airplanes that may put you at ease:

First off, grab an isle seat. Not being able to see out the window might make you feel more at ease. Bring music, video games, something interesting to read, etc. Anything to keep you busy. Get to know your neighbor. 4 hours and 47 minutes is just 2 movies and 2 good CDs.

As you are seating in the isle, look at the faces of flight attendants to gage the seriousness of the turbulence you are experiencing. They have gone through serious turbulence, and you will see it in their faces when it's really bad.

If you can sleep in the plane, go for it. Dramamine will make you a little drowzy. Are you OK with feeling like that? You can ask your doctor for a prescription for Xanax or Ativan. They will help you relax and take the anxiety out of flying.

Read the inflight magazine and browse through the Skymall catalog, except start at the back page and make your way to the front with your non-dominant hand. It will take you longer and force you to concentrate, which will take your mind off flying.

To educate J, Marine Recon and Force Recon are trained paratroopers. Force Recon are even trained in HILO and HIHO jumps. They aren't special ops. Parachute riggers in the Marine Corps are trained as paratroopers and have jumped out of aircraft. Just to let you know.
