Basically, when you use a android phone, you must be signed in to the phone using one of your google account. Google helps you backup and restore your contacts very easily just in few steps. Before, you might want to try restoring, I would suggest you to login to your gmail account on a PC and go to the "Contacts" Menu as shown in the figure below. You should find all your contacts in this window. Now go to your phone, follow the steps:1. Go to settings.2. Go to Accounts.3. Select Google.4. You should be able to see all your google accounts here. 5. Make sure you have the same account that holds your contacts is configured here. (Otherwise add it using "Add Account" option)6. Now you can synch all or any of your desired applications as below.7. Make sure you have the Contacts Sync button on as seen in the above pic.8. Now, press the 3 dots in the top of the above screen, and select Sync Now.9. You should be able to see all your missed contacts, are getting synched from your gmail account. Now, what if you do not have your contacts in your gmail account? If you have them in form of soft copy (any file) you can import it in to your gmail contacts as CSV file. and then sync them up easily to your mail. So, I recommend all of you to enable auto sync in your android device with your google account and make sure the contacts are synched by checking in the gmail contacts. Beacuse the contacts are sometimes invaluable to us. Let me know, if you want any more help in this.

Is it safe to remove a SIM card while your phone is on?

There's no reason why you would need to power the device off just to remove a SIM Card unless the SIM Card cannot be physically removed without removing the battery. It will not cause any damage to the SIM Card if that was a concern. If you insert a SIM Card into the device then certain carrier-branded phones require an automatic restart for network provisioning, but otherwise you don't necessarily need to reboot even after inserting a SIM Card. Just need to adjust the network settings.

Can you find a lost phone if the sim card is removed and if it's been factory reseted?

If a phone (one that uses a SIM - so a GSM or LTE phone) has been reported as lost or stolen to the carrier/operator you had service on, they can enter the International Mobile Equipment Identifier (IMEI) of that phone into an Equipment Identity Register (EIR) system - both locally in their own systems and into global inter-carrier EIR systems. What then happens is that if the phone is used to register on a cellular network - no matter if it has been factory reset, or a new SIM is used - that phone is denied service and the carrier is notified of the attempt. This is not a perfect solution because:it does not necessarily give you a location till the carrier looks for it (if they can)some carriers do not use global EIR systems (either to report or to check against)some carriers do not follow through with reporting to the owner of that lost phone.some stolen phones are shipped outside the country where they were stolen to avoid the EIR check by carriers in that other country. But, it is better than doing nothing.

The phone number and service provider are stored on the SIM and this is not erased. There is no need to take it out.On an Android phone, go to Settings > General Management > Reset. (Different versions of Android name menus differently.)On an iPhone go to Settings > General > Reset.
