I Used To Be A Cutter And I Want To Join The U.s Army

Why do you want to join the US Army?

At the time I joined, I wanted training, travel and benefits (education, VA Loan and priority getting a federal job). It was 1982 and I was in my mid-20's. A recession had hit Detroit and I was out of a job. No wars were in site. Today, with the US unfocused foreign policy and an unending war in the middle east, I'd have to think long and hard about joining the Army. If I wanted to serve my country in the military today, I'd probably look into the Navy or Air Force.

Can I join the US Army as a Nigerian?

I wrote this in response to a previous question regarding an Irish citizen who wanted to join the U.S. Marine Corps and I think it probably applies in your case as well.“In general to enlist in any of the U.S. Armed Forces, non-U.S. citizens need to be Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) of the U.S. who have passed a background investigation and received a favorable military security suitability determination (MSSD) prior to entry on active, reserve, or guard service.Unless you have an immediate relative or a fiancee/spouse who is a U.S. citizen (Family Immigration), you have some expertise we need or significant money to start up a business in the U.S. (Employment-Based Immigrant Visas), your likeliest hope for an immigrant visa is the Diversity Visa program. General information about immigrating to the US can be found here: The Immigrant Visa Process.Once you’ve obtained a visa, been admitted to the U.S., and have your LPR (aka ‘Green’) card in hand, visit your local Marine Corps Recruiting Station and start the enlistment process. This should kick off the background investigation and military security suitability determination. You will not be placed on active duty and ship for recruit training until these are successfully closed.”

How can i cover self harm scars to join the army?

You cannot.

When at MEPS, you'll be undressed all the way up to your underwear while they look you over. They will ask you to remove anything that covers you up. You either do it, or your trip at MEPS ends there.

If anyone sees the scar and asks you about it, what are you going to say?

There are treatments out there for removing scars (to not be very discernible), but they're costly.

@ Chris J

Exactly...they will ask. What is he going to do? Lie? I guess that's one way...but will they believe you? It depends on the scar and what it looks like. Can he say it was just an accident when he ran into something...

I don't know...but usually cutters cut themselves in the same spot and it's very apparent to a trained eye.

Can I still join the u.s. army or navy if I used too be a cutter?

They will spot the marks at MEPS and drop you right away. It's a psychological issue. I don't think anyone would want you handling anything that can cause any form of damage, whatsoever (including firearms, explosives, knives, pens, cutlery, wires, rope, bits of metal, etc.).

EDIT: Lying doesn't work. Believe it or not, they can tell.

Why was a Garrison cap called a piss-cutter cap?

I wore one for 26 years and don't remember ever calling it that. We used a different four letter word starting with a 'c' to refer to it. I'll have to remember the piss-cutter name now. Good luck to you

Can you join the military if you have cutting scars on your arms?

You can have tattoos on your arm as long as it cannot be seen in a long sleeved shirt. Meaning not on the wrists or hands. The Air Force won't take you if it's on your right arm, though. The Army will take you.

Anyways saying "I am not psycho and will kill people" sounds pretty psycho to me.

If you have noticeable scars have fun thinking of a way to tell MEPS how you got them that won't result in you being DQ'd. Saying you cut yourself will be a perm-DQ.

To respond to "AD" answer..... If you get it tattoo'd over so you cannot see the scars and then lie about ever cutting yourself will not result in anything. If you are caught you will be DQ'd and that's it.

There is no way they can catch you unless you are a horrible liar or tell them you lied. Everything MEPS says about lying is a lie. They cannot do anything to you. They can't look at your medical records, they cannot put you in jail, and they cannot fine you. Do not listen to people who tell you to be honest.

The only time you should be honest is if you have a condition that will cause a problem while on duty. For example, you get terrible migraines. Tell them. Otherwise, keep your mouth shut.

Can I still join the Marines if I have self-harm scars?

Possibly if not probably. Self-harm scars, cutting, is an indication of mental health issues. Military training is very stressful and combat is even worse. One of the things that I had to do before going to the Army was to receive a medical exam. It was a full one too with the “turn and cough” deal. I imagine that the Corps does the same. They want to make sure that anyone going in is going to be able tough it out and make it through training and become an effective soldier/marine. Self-harming scars would seem to be an indication that you have problems and may not have the ability to “take it”.It could come down to have many you have and how obvious they are. If it’s just one here and there that could have come from other means then you might be okay. But if they are serious and very noticeable then they will ask you questions. It’s nothing personal.. they just want to make sure that the person that they are going to invest quite a few $$ into will make the cut. Finally, if you cut yourself up because of stress and stuff then maybe the military is a bad choice for you. If you’re freaking out because of school, friends, family, and “normal stuff” then you’re in serious trouble when you put on the uniform! It ain’t a picnic and stress is a HUGE part of training. Coming unglued in combat will get you and your buddies killed. So at the very least, and for your own good, you might want to get yourself checkout by a shrink and get the tools you need to deal with life, especially in the military if you can swing it. Because, seriously, cutting is a sign of serious mental issues.

Could a US Coast Guard Cutter detect a military grade submarine? Do Cutters carry the needed equipment for sonar operations at that level?

not anymore. we used to be very good at asw. no cg units carry the gear anymore. actually the navy has been kinda slack with asw as well but they do still have the gear and train. my dad, was a former sonarman in the cg. there has been some chatter about bringing the skill and gear back but it’s rare.

Can I get a waiver to join the Air Force?

i am guessing because you don't like the answers the last time you asked this question, you are going to ask it again (and keep asking) until someone says somehting different. look, it is NOT UP TO US. Nothing anyone in here says is going to help you get this waiver. we are just going based on experience.

that being said, waivers for the air force are very, VERY difficult to get (it is harder to join the AF than Navy), and for anything medical - vitually impossible. In today's recruting climate, the AF, and likely the Navy will fill all thier billets with people that don't need a waiver at all. I am going to go out on a limb (again) and say you do not get this waiver. About the ONLY wiaver i could see someone getting would be for having one too many kids, and that would be an exceptionally well qualified candidate, great credit history, and a good income to debt ratio after a means test. and even that is no guarantee in this climate.

as for what you did in 9th grade, you would have had better luck had you explained the scars as having lost control on a bike or snowmobile and running into a barbed wire fence, been in an accident and got cut by glass, etc.

doesn't matter if they hold your records for 2 years or not (generally they only hold on to records that long if someone is being considered for a medical waiver and while awaiting special tests, etc, ordered by the MEPS - that does not apply to you since they will not consider you for a waiver). in the case of a permanent DQ (i.e. cutting), that record is forever linked to your SSAN. as soon as you get to the MEPS (if you lie to the recruiter), they will see it when they put your SSAN in the database. the red flag will pop up, and you'll be on your way home before your breakfast has a chance to settle.

you are right, you have nothing to lose by trying, but don't get your hopes up. i think you will be wasting your time. Time for a "Plan 'B'".

one thing that MIGHT get you in - go to college, get a professional degree (like Physical Therapy, or especially NURSING - the service is presently hard-up for nurses) pass your state board, then contact a health sciences recruiter and see if you can get a direct commission based on your professional vocation. Now you'll have to get your degree first, but i think that may be your only option.

good luck. i'm sure we'll see your question again soon....
