Insomnia And Cravings During Anorexia Recovery

Anorexia, Pros and Cons?

Pros: You end up looking like a skeleton. But it's not Halloween yet.

Cons: Decrease in metabolism, possible nausea, lightheadedness, headaches, stomach pains, malnutrition, more susceptibility to viral and/or bacterial infections, increase in body hair over time, wrinkled skin, weakness... this list is endless.

The cons outweigh the pros. Please, stop considering this. It's really not a good idea. >:

Do anorexics have food craving?

Yes. When I was anorexic, I had many food cravings because of low blood sugar caused by eating a bowl of oatmeal, a piece of cheese, and 2 rice cakes every day. They were usually for very high-calorie, sugary foods.

Anorexia: I'm currently in recovery, but I sometimes experience heavy eating binges, and craving for food, even after a large dinner - how come?

This is totally normal. You’re experiencing “extreme hunger”, which is just your body’s natural reaction to having more food again. It probably feels like your stomach’s an endless pit, right? You’ve been depriving yourself from vital nutrients for a long time so your brain’s simply sending signals to eat more and make sure you’re getting the energy, vitamins and minerals necessary to your recovery. Trust your instincts, your body knows what you need!Of course a big amount of food can feel uncomfortable, even painful, on the stomach. This will get better over time as your body readapts to eating bigger amounts of food. It might also increase your anxiety. Take your time eating and enjoying the food as much as you can, try to eat with friends and family, and remember that you are making a brave decision to be the healthiest, happiest version of yourself. It will get easier over time. Keep going in recovery xx

Why does anorexia cause insomnia?

One of the most important parts of recovery is rest. Rest, rest, and then rest some more. You need to give your body time and space to heal and repair itself, both on the outside and the inside.Ref: Say Goodnight to Insomnia – Kate Nichol – MediumNot being able to sleep is a sign that you are not eating enough or still not at your body’s healthy weight. It means you gotta eat more! You can’t sleep because your body recognizes you need food. Like ASAP. And it knows that if you’re asleep, it has zero chance of getting that food.So it keeps you awake. It pumps adrenaline through you in hopes of you finding food. It’s a basic survival response. And if you do happen to fall asleep, you probably don’t sleep restfully or for very long because your body wakes up shouting FOOD FOOD FOOD.I know there’s a super science-y explanation about hormones and your brain and all that but to put it simply, you can’t sleep because you’re hungry. Because your body doesn’t want to starve anymore. It’s not cool that you are harming yourself by not eating but it IS cool how smart our bodies are. So start listening to yours! If you’re finding that you can’t fall asleep or stay asleep during recovery, try upping your minimums and eat more.

After anorexia :/ help :(?

I once recovered from anorexia. Those cravings are natural..you have starved your body and it needs the nutrients. It is okay to gain weight, you need to. I understand the mental part of it is the hardest part. Do not feel bad. Think of it as providing your body with proper nutrition so you can be healthy and have vibrant skin as well as energy to do things that you love. The cravings will mellow out with time. Just feed yourself an abundance of healthy foods. Once your body starts healing itself, the cravings will not be as strong.

Symptoms are insomnia, pale itchy skin, dark eyes, no energy, losing hair, and growing hairs on the back of your shoulders (like long peach fuzz) its called Lanugo.

I am very glad you are seeing a counselor for this. It seems as though you WANT to get better, which is the first step. Take it one step at a time in a positive direction. Try and turn off that part of your brain that makes you feel like you have lost control or feel guilt about eating. Reaffirm yourself with the positive..which is you need the calories to LIVE..your body needs them to get better and to be healed. You are on the road to recovery. Keep it up GIRL! You can do it!

Why does a very low calorie diet cause insomnia?

because you're hungry and your blood sugar goes too low.

Do people with anorexia nervosa never get hungry? And what goes through their mind that prevents them from eating?

Whenever I hear someone say “I wish I was anorexic” because they think an anorexic has so. much. willpower. and they will be so super able to resist the craving around food every normal person has,… I feel sick. You know how it went for me? In the beginning, I went to sleep with hunger pangs every single night. And I enjoyed it, because I felt as if I deserved it, that it served me right, because I hated myself so much that even if I was hungry it was out of the question for me to eat.Eventually, my hunger cues became disordered, my stomach shrunk, and I felt less and less hungry. I think this is also a biologically conditioned thing, because if you enter the phase in life where food is scarce, it would be suffocating for you to have hunger pangs. HOWEVER, you want to know what replaces the hunger pangs? Food on your mind every freaking moment.I was unable to concentrate in school, I was unable to do anything, to enjoy anything, even though it didn’t seem like it because mechanically, I still managed to get good grades. But on the inside I was suffering, I was always thinking about food and eating it, even if it was about how to eat less. What went through my mind was irrational. It was fear and self-hatred. And food.If you ever again think about how nice it would be for your weight-loss plan to become an anorexic as if it´s a personal choice and a form of lifestyle, think again.

When a person is anorexic when do you start to notice their weight loss?

When the face becomes gaunt and hair is starting to fall out. You notice the arms are extremely smaller than usually and the gauntness in the eyes. They become sunken in.
